Russian Propaganda Campaign Targets Children in Occupied Ukrainian Schools

A concerning new propaganda initiative has emerged in schools across temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, where Russian authorities have launched a “Week Before Defender of the Motherland Day” campaign aimed at indoctrinating children with pro-Russian sentiments.

The Eastern Human Rights Group revealed these developments in a recent Facebook post, highlighting how the campaign operates under the guise of “serving the Motherland” and “proper upbringing.” In the occupied city of Svitlodarsk, fifth-grade students are being subjected to lessons glorifying “feats of heroes,” “honorable military service,” and so-called “heroes of the DPR” during mandatory “Conversations About Important Things” sessions.

Following these propaganda lessons, children are encouraged to participate in the all-Russian campaign called “Our Defenders of the Motherland,” which urges them to emulate individuals fighting on behalf of the Russian occupation forces.

Human rights observers note that this systematic approach represents a calculated effort to normalize war and frame service to the occupying regime as virtuous. The strategy appears particularly insidious in its use of peer pressure mechanisms, with children themselves being enlisted as propagandists through roles like “class monitors” and “patriotic sectors.”

“The war continues not only on the front line; it continues in the minds of children, and it is there that the occupation regime is trying to entrench itself for decades,” the Eastern Human Rights Group emphasized in their statement.
