Russian schools have become a battleground for propaganda in the wake of Ukraine invasion, according to a teacher who documented the indoctrination of children firsthand.
Pavel Talankin, formerly employed as a videographer at School No. 1 in Karabash, a small Russian town in the Urals, has revealed disturbing details about how Russian schools are systematically indoctrinating children with pro-war propaganda following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
“When I recorded the first lesson, I thought I was going crazy. The history teacher explained that Russia, Ukraine and Belarus are friendly countries, but that Ukraine has slipped into neo-Nazism and we must liberate it,” Talankin told German public broadcaster ARD.
According to Talankin, Russian schools now hold weekly “conversations about important things” every Monday, where children participate in nationalist rituals including honoring the Russian flag, writing letters to soldiers at the front, and learning military drills. His footage reveals even more alarming activities, including a school trip to visit the Wagner paramilitary group, where mercenaries taught children combat techniques such as how to properly wear helmets to avoid neck injuries from weapon recoil. Children were also instructed in firing weapons and throwing grenades.
Talankin was originally tasked with filming these activities as evidence for the Ministry of Education, with instructions to destroy the footage afterward. However, he made the morally significant decision to preserve the recordings.
“It became clear to me that I don’t have the moral right to delete all this. Because this is evidence of how propaganda penetrates Russian schools and what goes on inside them,” he explained.
The militarization of Russian education appears to be part of a larger strategy by Russian President Vladimir Putin to create what Talankin describes as a “youth army” across the country, drawing parallels to the Soviet-era Pioneer organization that indoctrinated generations of Soviet children.
The shift in educational priorities has triggered a significant exodus from the teaching profession. Nearly 200,000 teachers have resigned from their positions across Russia in the past two years, indicating widespread discontent within the educational system.
At Talankin’s school, staff were divided in their political allegiances. Some, like the physical education teacher, were staunch Putin supporters who volunteered to fight in Ukraine, while others privately expressed critical views about the country’s direction.
After documenting these activities for two years, Talankin determined that remaining in Russia had become too dangerous. He managed to escape with his footage and has since been granted asylum in the Czech Republic. His journey to safety included connecting with an American director in Denmark through social media, which led to the creation of a documentary exposing these practices.
Talankin warns that the West’s approach to Russia is dangerously naive. “Even if we manage to hold peace talks now, even if we manage to stop this war, it will not really end,” he cautioned. He believes Putin will frame any potential truce as a victory, and the propaganda that has been instilled in Russian students will have lasting effects.
“The propaganda will stay in their heads,” Talankin emphasized, suggesting that the ideological impact of this systematic indoctrination could shape Russia’s societal attitudes and political landscape for generations to come.
His testimony provides a rare inside look at how the Russian state is using its educational system to cultivate support for its geopolitical ambitions, raising serious concerns about the long-term implications for peace and stability in the region.
