Russian Propaganda Campaign Targets Ukrainian Athletes at 2026 Winter Olympics

Russian propagandists have launched a coordinated disinformation campaign targeting Ukraine and its athletes during the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, according to Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CPD).

The CPD, which operates under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, reported that Russian Telegram channels are circulating fabricated materials designed to damage Ukraine’s international reputation and discredit its Olympic participants as the games get underway in Milan, Italy.

At the center of these efforts is a forged news story purportedly from an international news agency containing false claims about Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Geraskevych and his brother. According to the CPD, the propagandists claim Geraskevych’s brother works at Kyiv’s Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center—an assertion the agency identifies as completely fabricated.

The original media content has undergone significant manipulative editing, with altered titles, edited video sequences, and the insertion of fabricated statements to create a misleading narrative about Ukrainian athletes.

“The aim is to discredit Ukraine on the international stage, tarnish the reputation of Ukrainian athletes, and spread anti-Ukrainian narratives among the global audience,” the CPD stated in its Telegram channel announcement.

The timing of these propaganda efforts is particularly strategic, coinciding with the opening ceremonies of the 25th Winter Olympic Games in Milan. This timing amplifies the potential impact of the disinformation, creating what the CPD calls “additional resonance for manipulative disruption in the information space.”

The CPD has also identified similar fabricated narratives targeting a Hungarian athlete, suggesting the campaign extends beyond Ukrainian competitors to potentially sow discord among multiple Olympic delegations.

This disinformation effort represents part of a broader, systematic information warfare campaign that has intensified since the beginning of the Winter Games. Russia has long used major international sporting events as platforms for propaganda and disinformation, a tactic that has become more pronounced since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The sports arena has increasingly become a battleground for information warfare between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian athletes have frequently used their international platforms to raise awareness about the war in their homeland, while Russian state media and affiliated channels work to counter these messages with alternative narratives.

Vladyslav Geraskevych, the targeted athlete, has previously garnered attention not just for his sporting achievements but also for his outspoken stance on the war. During the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, which took place just before Russia’s full-scale invasion, Geraskevych displayed a “No War in Ukraine” sign after completing a run—a moment that received significant international media coverage.

The CPD has urged continued vigilance in monitoring the information landscape surrounding the Olympics and other sporting events. The agency emphasizes the importance of recognizing manipulations quickly to maintain fact-based reporting and prevent the spread of disinformation.

International Olympic Committee officials have not yet commented on these specific allegations of Russian disinformation targeting athletes. However, the Olympic movement has repeatedly faced challenges in keeping geopolitical conflicts from spilling over into competition, particularly as digital platforms make information warfare increasingly sophisticated.

The CPD recommends that media outlets and the public exercise additional scrutiny when consuming news related to Ukrainian athletes during the Olympics to avoid inadvertently amplifying fabricated narratives.
