In a remarkable turn of events, Lauren Chen, the right-wing media personality who left the United States in disgrace last July, has returned to American soil just in time for the holiday season, thanks to apparent intervention from Trump administration officials.
Chen, whose Tenet Media YouTube channel was exposed by the FBI in 2024 as a Russian propaganda front, announced her return on social media platforms on Christmas Day. She specifically thanked Joe Rittenhouse, a senior adviser on consular affairs at the State Department and former Trump campaign worker, for “moving mountains” to facilitate her return.
“The biggest thank you to Joe Rittenhouse at the State Department for ensuring we were able to return in time for the holidays!” Chen wrote on Instagram. She extended her gratitude to Customs and Border Protection, the FBI, and “the administration broadly” for making her return possible.
Rittenhouse confirmed his involvement in a social media post, writing: “This Christmas I’m so happy to help correct the wrongs of the past administration. Being able to bring Lauren and her family back for Christmas would not be possible without new Leadership at the Whitehouse, FBI, CBP, and State Department.”
Chen’s unexpected return to the United States comes after her forced departure when a September 2024 indictment from the Southern District of New York targeted Tenet’s Russian funders for circumventing Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) requirements. While Chen and her husband Liam Donovan were not directly indicted, court documents alleged they schemed with RT employees to direct $10 million to Tenet Media and created a fictional persona to conceal the source of funding from at least one pundit.
The allegations led to Chen losing her work visa and disappearing from social media platforms for several months. In a July statement marking her brief return to social media, Chen lamented: “Because my American visa was contingent upon our company, we had no choice but to leave our home and children’s place of birth. We are doing everything in our power to get a new visa and return home.”
This special treatment for Chen stands in stark contrast to the Trump administration’s broader immigration policies, which have significantly restricted visa access—even denying entry to activists opposed to disinformation. Rittenhouse himself has briefed media on the administration’s student-visa revocations in other contexts.
The Tenet Media scandal shook right-wing media circles when it was revealed that the channel, which featured prominent MAGA commentators like Tim Pool, Benny Johnson, and Dave Rubin, was allegedly funded by RT, a pro-Putin propaganda outlet. These commentators have since maintained their innocence, claiming they were “victims” who were duped into taking substantial sums for content creation without knowledge of the Russian backing.
Despite the controversy, most of the commentators involved have faced minimal professional consequences. In fact, many have seen their audiences grow since the scandal broke. Chen appears to have been the only one significantly affected due to her immigration status—a situation now apparently remedied through direct intervention from the current administration.
According to court records, the federal case against Tenet’s Russian funders remains open, though little progress has been made in the year since indictments were filed, with the Russian operators who allegedly facilitated the money-laundering scheme still at large.
Requests for comment from the FBI, CBP, the White House, the State Department, Chen, and Rittenhouse went unanswered.
The Trump administration’s assistance to Chen represents an unusual case of helping a Canadian national implicated in a Russian propaganda scheme re-enter the country, raising questions about the administration’s priorities regarding foreign influence in American media.
