Russian propaganda efforts have escalated with the deployment of AI-generated videos targeting Ukraine’s defensive positions in Kupiansk, according to a recent report from the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD).

The fabricated videos feature artificial intelligence-created “Ukrainian soldiers” discussing a purportedly “critical situation” in Kupiansk. These sophisticated forgeries are part of Russia’s ongoing information warfare campaign designed to undermine Ukrainian morale and spread misinformation about battlefield conditions.

Experts at the CCD have identified several telltale signs of these AI-generated videos, including unnatural facial movements and robotic, uniform voice patterns typical of synthetic media. Perhaps most revealing is a linguistic error made by the fake soldiers who consistently mispronounce “Kupiansk” by placing the stress on the wrong syllable—saying “KupyAnsk” rather than the correct Ukrainian pronunciation “KUpyansk.”

“In reality, claims about the supposed complete encirclement of Kupiansk by Russian forces are false. Intense fighting continues in the area, and Ukrainian troops are holding their positions,” the CCD clarified in their statement addressing the disinformation.

The Kupiansk region, located in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv Oblast, has been a strategic flashpoint since the full-scale Russian invasion. The city was initially occupied by Russian forces in the early days of the conflict before being liberated by Ukraine in September 2022. Since then, it has remained a contested area where control of territory carries both military and psychological significance.

This latest disinformation effort comes amid Russia’s broader strategy to control the narrative around its military actions in Ukraine, particularly in areas where Ukrainian forces continue to resist Russian advances. By creating the impression that Ukrainian defensive positions are collapsing, Moscow aims to influence both domestic and international perceptions of the conflict.

The CCD has emphasized that Russian disinformation techniques are becoming increasingly sophisticated, requiring greater vigilance from media consumers. “Russian fakes are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so it’s crucial to verify information sources and approach ‘sensational’ social media videos with skepticism,” the agency warned.

This is not an isolated incident in Russia’s propaganda campaign. The CCD has previously identified several waves of AI-generated disinformation videos circulating on social media platforms. One recent example involved a fabricated video on TikTok claiming that “large numbers of Ukrainian soldiers surrendered near Pokrovsk.” These videos were strategically captioned in multiple foreign languages to reach international audiences.

Analysis of the accounts spreading these videos revealed patterns consistent with a coordinated network designed to amplify Kremlin narratives globally. Digital forensics experts note that such campaigns typically target platforms with less rigorous content moderation or where users may be less familiar with the conflict’s details.

Another debunked propaganda video suggested that Ukrainian commanders had ordered soldiers to kill comrades who attempted to retreat or surrender. The CCD highlighted that Russia provided no evidence to support this claim—no documents, photos, or official confirmations—relying instead on anonymous sources to spread panic and distrust within Ukrainian ranks.

As AI-generated content becomes more convincing and easier to produce, military analysts warn that distinguishing truth from fabrication will become increasingly challenging in conflict zones. This evolution of information warfare presents new challenges for fact-checkers, journalists, and citizens trying to understand the reality of the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian officials continue to urge both domestic and international audiences to rely on verified official sources and to approach dramatic videos and claims with heightened skepticism, particularly when they align with Russian strategic messaging objectives.
