Russian state media outlet RT-India has retracted a misleading video that falsely portrayed Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif waiting for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Peace and Trust Forum in Turkmenistan.

The controversial footage, which RT-India deleted from its X (formerly Twitter) account, was weaponized by numerous Indian news outlets to claim that PM Sharif had “gate-crashed” a meeting between Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The narrative quickly spread across social media platforms before the Russian outlet acknowledged its error.

In a brief statement posted on X, RT-India wrote: “We deleted an earlier post about Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif waiting to meet Vladimir Putin at the Peace and Trust Forum in Turkmenistan. The post may have been a misrepresentation of the events.” Critics noted that the apology appeared qualified, with RT-India only acknowledging that the content “may have” misrepresented the situation rather than taking full responsibility for spreading misinformation.

The incident illustrates the growing challenge of cross-border information warfare in the South Asian region, where tensions between Pakistan and India frequently spill into media coverage. Pakistani journalist Tariq Mateen, who initially amplified the misleading content, was also forced to retract his post, admitting: “I also deleted my tweet. The video claimed that one on one did not happen and the PM had to ‘gate crash’ into Putin-Erdogan meeting.”

Several prominent members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Qasim Suri, had quickly circulated the video, echoing Indian media narratives before the correction was issued.

PM Sharif was in Ashgabat to participate in the International Year of Peace and Trust 2025 forum and the International Day of Neutrality commemoration. His actual diplomatic agenda contrasted sharply with the portrayal in the misleading video.

During his address to the forum on December 12, Sharif raised serious concerns about rising terrorism threats emanating from Afghanistan, calling on the Afghan government to take decisive action against militant groups operating from its territory. This security warning comes amid increasing cross-border attacks affecting Pakistan’s border regions.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Pakistan’s active role in international peace mediation, specifically pointing to recent diplomatic efforts toward achieving a ceasefire in Gaza. He noted that this initiative was undertaken with support from regional partners including Qatar, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran.

In his remarks, Sharif emphasized dialogue and diplomacy as fundamental principles guiding Pakistan’s foreign policy approach. He addressed pressing global challenges including climate change and economic inequality, while outlining his government’s domestic priorities focused on green development initiatives, financial inclusion programs, and women’s empowerment.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable peace and development in his capacity as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, signaling the country’s intent to play a constructive role in international affairs.

After completing his two-day official visit, Sharif departed from Ashgabat, where he was seen off by Turkmenistan’s Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet and Head of Transport and Communications, Muhammad Khan Chekiyef.

The incident highlights the increasing velocity of misinformation in international reporting and underscores the need for rigorous fact-checking, particularly when covering diplomatic engagements in geopolitically sensitive regions.
