Russian Military’s Claims of Controlling Kupyansk Contradicted by Evidence

Ukrainian officials are challenging Russian claims of controlling the city of Kupyansk, revealing that drone footage presented by the Russian Ministry of Defense as proof of their occupation actually demonstrates the opposite. According to the Center for Countering Disinformation (CPD) of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, the footage shows Russian troops retreating from the northern outskirts of the city rather than maintaining control.

The CPD analysis indicates that what Russian authorities are presenting as evidence of their capture of Kupyansk is in reality documentation of their withdrawal. This represents the latest instance of information manipulation in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, where control of key cities has been fiercely contested.

“The Russian propaganda attempt is so transparent to those familiar with the area that even some Russian Telegram channels have refuted these claims,” the CPD stated in their report. The contradiction highlights the ongoing information warfare that parallels the physical conflict in the region.

Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have been asserting control over Kupyansk since late November. However, Ukrainian defense authorities maintain that their forces have successfully repelled Russian troops and currently hold approximately 90% of the strategic city.

Kupyansk, located in the Kharkiv region, has significant strategic importance as a transportation hub. The city sits near the Oskil River, which has formed a natural defensive line in the conflict. Control of the city provides logistical advantages for military operations in eastern Ukraine and represents a symbolic victory for either side.

Viktor Tregubov, head of communications for Ukraine’s Joint Forces Group, has provided additional context, stating that Russian forces in Kupyansk are effectively surrounded with limited options for reinforcement or extraction. He noted that current Russian military efforts appear focused not on securing Kupyansk itself but rather on establishing positions along the eastern bank of the Oskil River.

This pattern of contested narratives about territorial control has become a recurring theme in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both sides sometimes making contradictory claims about the same locations. Independent verification remains challenging due to the active combat environment and restricted access for international observers.

Military analysts suggest that Russian forces may be conducting limited operations in urban areas like Kupyansk to draw Ukrainian resources away from other sectors of the front line. Meanwhile, Ukrainian defense strategy has increasingly focused on holding key urban centers while conducting more mobile operations in surrounding areas.

Ukrainian forces recaptured significant territory in the region during a counteroffensive in 2022, but Russian pressure has remained persistent, particularly along the border areas.
