Russian media inadvertently reveals secret anti-drone airfield in propaganda blunder

Russian state television has accidentally exposed the location of a secret military airfield used for anti-drone operations in occupied Ukrainian territory, turning what was intended as patriotic propaganda into a security breach that benefits Ukrainian intelligence.

The televised segment, meant to showcase Russia’s “innovative military technology,” instead revealed the coordinates of a covert base housing modified Yak-52 and Cessna aircraft that have been repurposed to intercept and shoot down Ukrainian drones.

Ukrainian military analysts at Defense Express quickly capitalized on the error, analyzing footage that showed a Yak-52 aircraft with the registration number RA-1874G. The plane belongs to the Russian special forces unit Bars-Sarmat. Using landmarks visible in the broadcast, analysts pinpointed the operation to the privately owned Korsak airfield, approximately 20 kilometers southeast of occupied Melitopol in southern Ukraine.

Satellite imagery has since confirmed the location’s identity and recent activity. Photos taken between August 30 and September 7 revealed a newly constructed asphalt runway and fresh infrastructure developments matching the details inadvertently broadcast on Russian television. The narrow taxiway, distinctive hangars, and metallic roofing visible in the footage perfectly match the satellite images of the Korsak facility.

“This level of operational security failure is surprising for what Russia presents as a sophisticated military power,” said a defense analyst who requested anonymity. “Broadcasting the location of a secret facility defeats the purpose of having it be secret in the first place.”

Perhaps more embarrassing for Moscow, Ukrainian experts noted that the modifications showcased in the Russian propaganda piece weren’t even original innovations. Defense Express characterized the adaptations as “merely copies of Ukraine’s earlier counter-drone tactics,” pointing out that Ukrainian forces had already been repurposing similar aircraft for drone interception months earlier.

The Yak-52, originally designed as a civilian training aircraft during the Soviet era, has been crudely converted into a light combat platform by both sides in the conflict. The Russian adaptation features a gunner positioned behind the pilot, armed with an automatic rifle. Some of the modified aircraft appear to be equipped with twin Kord 12.7mm machine guns mounted beneath the fuselage, according to footage verified by analysts and reports shared by military tracking account Status-6.

This incident highlights the ongoing technological adaptation race in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where both sides continually repurpose civilian equipment for military applications. Drones have become a critical battlefield component, used for reconnaissance and precision strikes, while counter-drone systems have evolved in parallel.

The revelation of this secret airfield could have significant tactical implications. Ukrainian forces now have precise coordinates for a facility that houses aircraft specifically tasked with countering their drone operations—potentially making it a high-value target.

The blunder underscores the challenges Russia faces in maintaining operational security while simultaneously producing propaganda for domestic consumption. As the conflict continues into its third year, these kinds of mistakes may become increasingly costly on the battlefield.

Military analysts suggest this incident may prompt Russia to relocate the exposed operations, creating logistical challenges and temporarily reducing their counter-drone capabilities in the strategically important Melitopol region. For Ukraine, it represents an intelligence windfall delivered directly by Russian state media—a propaganda effort that backfired dramatically.
