In a significant move affecting millions of young gamers, Russia has blocked access to Roblox, the popular US-owned gaming platform, accusing it of distributing extremist content and promoting “LGBT propaganda,” according to state media reports on Wednesday.

The California-based platform, which allows users to create and share their own games, had become Russia’s most downloaded mobile game in 2023, as reported by the Russian newspaper Vedomosti, making this ban particularly impactful for the country’s gaming community.

Media regulator Roskomnadzor issued a statement, published by Russian news agencies, claiming that Roblox contained “inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children.”

The regulator’s allegations against the platform were severe, stating: “Children in the game are subjected to sexual harassment, intimate photos are tricked out of them, and they are coerced into committing depraved acts and violence.”

Roblox Corporation, headquartered in San Mateo, California, has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the ban. The company now faces the challenge of potentially losing access to one of its significant international markets.

The gaming platform boasts approximately 100 million daily active users worldwide, with children under 13 accounting for roughly 40 percent of its user base in 2024, according to company data. Russian users began reporting difficulties accessing the platform earlier on Wednesday, with multiple internet monitoring sites confirming widespread outages.

This ban aligns with similar actions taken by other countries including Qatar, Iraq, and Turkey, which have also restricted access to Roblox, primarily citing child safety concerns. In the United States, the platform faces legal challenges as well, with Texas and Louisiana filing lawsuits against the company over similar issues.

Roblox Corporation has consistently maintained that it employs both human reviewers and artificial intelligence tools to moderate all content, with specific systems designed to remove “exploitative content” from the platform. However, critics argue these measures have been insufficient to address the scale of content moderation required.

The Russian ban comes amid the country’s increasingly restrictive approach to foreign digital platforms. Technology experts view this as part of a broader pattern of digital isolation, with Russian authorities seeking greater control over online spaces accessible to their citizens.

Just last week, Roskomnadzor announced it was considering banning WhatsApp, Russia’s second most popular messaging application, claiming the platform failed to prevent “crime.” This trend of threatening foreign-owned digital platforms with bans has been identified by digital rights advocates as part of a systematic effort by Russian authorities to expand surveillance and control over internet usage within the country.

Since 2022, Russia has accelerated its digital sovereignty initiatives, blocking numerous Western social media platforms and news sites. Major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have already faced restrictions in the country, forcing Russian users to rely on VPN services to maintain access to these global networks.

Technology policy experts suggest that beyond content concerns, these bans align with Russia’s broader geopolitical strategy to reduce Western technological influence while promoting domestic alternatives in the digital space.

For the millions of young Russian Roblox enthusiasts, the ban represents not just the loss of a gaming platform but also disconnection from a global creative community where many had established digital identities and social connections.
