Russia has blocked access to the popular online gaming platform Roblox, citing concerns over “extremist materials” and “LGBT propaganda,” according to state media reports released Wednesday.

The California-based platform, which allows users to create and share their own games, had become Russia’s most downloaded mobile game in 2023, according to the Russian newspaper Vedomosti. This ban represents a significant disruption for millions of Russian users who have made the platform a central part of their online entertainment ecosystem.

In a statement distributed by Russian news agencies, the country’s media regulator Roskomnadzor claimed the platform contained “inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children.” The agency further alleged that “children in the game are subjected to sexual harassment, intimate photos are tricked out of them, and they are coerced into committing depraved acts and violence.”

Roblox Corporation, headquartered in San Mateo, California, did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the Russian ban. The company faces a significant loss in what had become a key growth market.

The platform boasts approximately 100 million daily active users globally, with children under 13 accounting for roughly 40 percent of its user base in 2024, according to company data. This young demographic has made Roblox both commercially successful and a lightning rod for concerns about online child safety.

Russian users began reporting difficulties accessing the platform earlier Wednesday, with outage tracking websites confirming widespread connection issues throughout the country. The timing suggests a coordinated blocking effort by Russian authorities.

This is not the first time Roblox has faced governmental restrictions. The platform has previously been banned in Qatar, Iraq, and Turkey, primarily over child safety concerns. In the United States, the company faces legal challenges from Texas and Louisiana, which have filed lawsuits citing similar issues.

Roblox Corporation maintains that it employs both human reviewers and artificial intelligence tools to moderate content and remove “exploitative material.” However, critics argue that the platform’s vast user-generated content ecosystem makes comprehensive moderation exceptionally difficult.

The Roblox ban aligns with Russia’s broader pattern of restricting foreign-owned digital platforms and services. Digital rights advocates have characterized these actions as part of a systematic effort by Russian authorities to control information flow and monitor internet usage within the country.

Just last week, Russia’s media regulator announced it was considering banning WhatsApp, the second most popular messaging service in the country, alleging that the platform fails to prevent criminal activity. This potential ban would affect millions of Russian users who rely on the service for daily communications.

The targeting of popular Western technology platforms reflects escalating tensions between Russia and Western technology companies amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and widening geopolitical divisions. Digital platforms have increasingly become proxies in these broader political conflicts.

For the gaming industry, Russia’s ban on Roblox signals continuing challenges for international gaming companies operating in markets with strict content regulations and different cultural standards. The move could potentially influence how other gaming platforms approach content moderation and localization for the Russian market going forward.

As digital spaces become more central to social interaction, education, and entertainment, especially for younger users, the regulation of these platforms increasingly intersects with questions of national sovereignty, cultural values, and online safety.
