Russia has blocked access to the popular U.S. children’s gaming platform Roblox, accusing it of spreading extremist materials and promoting what authorities call “LGBT propaganda,” the country’s communications watchdog Roskomnadzor announced on Wednesday.

The regulator stated that Roblox was “rife with inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children,” though it did not specify which materials triggered the decision. Roblox Corp, which operates the platform that serves millions of young users worldwide, has not yet responded to requests for comment on the ban.

The gaming platform, which reported an impressive 151.5 million daily active users in the third quarter of 2025, is no stranger to regulatory challenges. It has previously faced bans in countries such as Iraq and Türkiye, where authorities cited concerns that predators were exploiting the platform to target children.

Roblox has consistently maintained that user safety is a priority. According to its website, the company is “rigorously committed” to protecting users through artificial intelligence tools, dedicated moderation teams, and active cooperation with law enforcement and child safety experts.

The Roblox ban represents the latest move in Russia’s increasingly aggressive campaign to control digital content and limit foreign tech influence within its borders. In recent years, Roskomnadzor has systematically restricted or completely blocked access to major Western online services, including Facebook, Instagram, and BBC News, typically citing violations of domestic laws regarding “extremism” and content related to what Russia terms “non-traditional sexual relations.”

This digital crackdown has intensified since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with authorities seeking tighter control over information available to Russian citizens. Last year, the language-learning application Duolingo was forced to remove all references to LGBT content after receiving warnings from Russian regulators.

Russia’s stance hardened further in 2023 when the government formally designated what it called the “international LGBT movement” as an extremist organization. This controversial move created legal grounds for authorities to open criminal cases against LGBT individuals and their supporters, raising serious human rights concerns from international organizations.

Beyond content restrictions, Russia has also targeted messaging applications and communication platforms. In August 2025, Roskomnadzor began limiting certain call functions on WhatsApp and Telegram, claiming the foreign-owned platforms refused to cooperate with Russian law enforcement in cases related to fraud and terrorism. Just last week, the regulator escalated pressure by threatening to block WhatsApp entirely if the company continued to resist demands for data access.

Technology analysts note that these measures align with a broader pattern of digital sovereignty initiatives that have accelerated in Russia since 2022. The government has increasingly pushed for localization of data storage and processing while expanding surveillance capabilities through domestic legislation.

Critics and human rights organizations argue that such measures represent part of the Kremlin’s wider campaign to suppress independent information sources and limit foreign influence under the guise of protecting national security and public morality. Digital rights advocates point to a troubling trend of using child protection and traditional values rhetoric to justify expanding censorship powers.

The Roblox ban will particularly impact younger Russians, as the platform has become a significant social and creative outlet for children and teenagers worldwide. With millions of user-created games and virtual spaces, Roblox has grown into more than just a gaming platform – it represents an entire digital ecosystem where young people socialize, create, and share experiences.

As digital restrictions continue to tighten in Russia, users increasingly turn to virtual private networks (VPNs) and other circumvention tools, despite authorities’ attempts to restrict these technologies as well.
