Russia has imposed restrictions on the popular online gaming platform Roblox, marking the latest move in the country’s expanding digital censorship campaign. The decision comes after Roskomnadzor, Russia’s communications regulator, accused the platform of promoting extremism and what it terms “LGBT propaganda,” according to reports from Reuters and Meduza.

The crackdown began shortly after The Guardian published an investigative report last month highlighting potential safeguarding issues on the platform. The investigation demonstrated how users could easily access content potentially inappropriate for children even with parental controls activated, raising alarm among Russian lawmakers who quickly seized on these concerns.

In its official statement, Roskomnadzor claimed that content available on Roblox “may negatively affect the spiritual and moral development of children.” The agency further alleged that “children in the game are exposed to sexual harassment, coerced into sharing intimate photos, and pushed toward lewd acts and violence,” as reported by Meduza.

This restriction fits into a broader pattern of digital censorship in Russia, which has intensified in recent years. The country has previously banned numerous Western social media and communication platforms including Discord, Facebook, and Instagram, while significantly limiting access to YouTube. The Roblox restriction comes alongside new limitations on FaceTime and WhatsApp, further isolating Russian internet users from global digital platforms.

Roblox, which boasts hundreds of millions of users worldwide and is particularly popular among children and teenagers, represents a significant target for Russian regulators. The platform functions as both a game and a game creation system, allowing users to program games and play content created by other users, making it difficult to monitor all user-generated content.

In response to the mounting pressure, Roblox has announced plans to strengthen its content moderation policies. The company stated it will implement stricter controls on sexual content and introduce an age estimation process as a prerequisite for chat functionality on the platform.

“We respect the local laws and regulations in the countries where we operate and believe Roblox provides a positive space for learning, creation and meaningful connection for everyone,” a Roblox spokesperson told Reuters. The company had not immediately responded to requests for comment from The Verge.

The restriction could have significant implications for the gaming industry in Russia, where Roblox has built a substantial user base. Industry analysts note that digital gaming platforms have become increasingly important social spaces for young people, particularly during the pandemic when in-person interactions were limited.

This move also highlights the growing tensions between global technology platforms and Russian authorities, who have been pushing for greater control over digital content available to Russian citizens. Under Russian law, companies operating in the country must comply with local regulations, including those related to content moderation and data storage.

Critics argue that Russia’s justification for the restriction—protecting children from harmful content—serves as a pretext for broader censorship goals, particularly targeting content that doesn’t align with the government’s social and political positions.

For Russian users of Roblox, particularly young people who form the core of the platform’s audience, the restriction means either losing access to a popular entertainment and social space or having to use VPN services to circumvent the block, a practice that has become increasingly common among Russian internet users seeking access to restricted websites and services.
