The Russian government has taken a firm stance against the popular children’s video game Roblox, blocking access nationwide over claims that the platform spreads “LGBT propaganda” and endangers children’s “spiritual and moral development.”

On Wednesday, Roskomnadzor, Russia’s communications monitoring and censorship agency, officially announced the ban, according to Reuters. The agency stated in a press release that Roblox contains “inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children,” specifically citing the dissemination of “LGBT propaganda,” as reported by Russian news agency Interfax.

This move represents the latest enforcement of Russia’s increasingly restrictive policies on LGBTQ+ content. The country has prohibited what it terms LGBTQ+ “propaganda” since 2013, with significant expansions to this ban implemented in 2023 when Russia’s Supreme Court classified the “international public LGBT movement” as an “extremist organization.” Current regulations broadly prohibit any pro-LGBTQ+ expression, including displays of rainbow imagery.

According to Interfax’s reporting, Roskomnadzor acknowledged that Roblox had previously removed three in-game materials “which depicted LGBT characters and attributes of the LGBT community” in July. However, the agency determined that the platform still violated the country’s anti-LGBTQ+ “propaganda” restrictions.

A Roblox spokesperson responded to the ban by telling Reuters: “We respect the local laws and regulations in the countries where we operate and believe Roblox provides a positive space for learning, creation and meaningful connection for everyone.” The spokesperson emphasized the company’s “deep commitment to safety” and referenced their “robust set of proactive and preventative safety measures designed to catch and prevent harmful content on our platform.”

The ban on Roblox follows a pattern of Russian authorities using child safety concerns as justification for restricting LGBTQ+ rights and content. Similar reasoning has underpinned expansions of the “propaganda” ban, including restrictions on “information that can make children want to change their sex.”

In recent months, Roskomnadzor has targeted other online platforms as well. In October, the agency blocked access to MyAnimeList, the world’s largest repository of anime and manga. In August, it imposed a fine of approximately $173,500 on Mangalib, an online manga library, alleging violations of the “LGBT propaganda” law in both instances.

The Roblox ban comes during a challenging year for the gaming platform, which has faced multiple allegations regarding child safety beyond Russia’s borders. The Roblox Corporation is currently battling at least three federal lawsuits in the United States claiming that children aged seven to 13 were sexually exploited on the platform. In response to these allegations, developers recently implemented facial recognition technology designed to prevent minors from communicating with adult users.

However, this technological solution has itself drawn criticism from digital privacy advocates, who argue that such systems can pose risks to LGBTQ+ individuals and other marginalized communities by potentially exposing sensitive personal information.

Russia’s ban on Roblox reflects the government’s ongoing campaign against what it perceives as Western cultural influences on Russian society, particularly targeting content accessible to young people. The move also illustrates how digital platforms operating globally must increasingly navigate complex and sometimes contradictory regulatory environments across different countries.

With over 200 million monthly active users worldwide prior to this ban, Roblox represents one of the most significant gaming platforms to be targeted by Russian censorship efforts, highlighting the expanding scope of the country’s content restrictions.

  1. While I understand Russia’s concerns about protecting children, banning Roblox entirely seems heavy-handed. There are likely more targeted ways to address any inappropriate content without resorting to broad censorship.

    • Lucas U. Johnson on

Agreed. Outright banning a platform used by many children seems like an extreme measure that could do more harm than good.

  2. While parental concerns about children’s online safety are understandable, banning Roblox entirely seems like a disproportionate response from the Russian government. This move feels more politically motivated than genuinely protective.

  3. William D. Moore on

It’s unfortunate to see Russia taking such a hardline approach to LGBTQ+ content, even in a children’s video game. This ban seems more about political posturing than actually protecting kids.

    • Exactly. Censorship and bans are rarely the best way to address complex social issues, especially when it comes to children’s media.

  4. This move by Russia raises worrying questions about their stance on LGBTQ+ rights and free expression. Blocking access to Roblox over perceived ‘propaganda’ is a concerning escalation of their crackdown on LGBTQ+ content.

  5. This Roblox ban is yet another example of Russia’s increasingly authoritarian policies. Restricting access to online platforms over perceived LGBTQ+ themes is a concerning trend that deserves close scrutiny.

  6. This ban seems like an overreaction by the Russian government. Roblox is a popular kids’ game, not a platform for political propaganda. Censoring content over perceived LGBTQ+ themes sets a dangerous precedent.
