In a heated political dispute unfolding in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader K K Rema has accused workers from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) of orchestrating a misinformation campaign against her former staff member.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Rema, who currently serves as an MLA, strongly denounced claims circulating online that her former personal staff member was injured while manufacturing a bomb in Vadakara. She clarified that the individual, identified as Riju, had actually sustained a minor finger injury while bursting firecrackers as part of traditional Vishu celebrations, a significant harvest festival in Kerala.

“Fake propaganda is being circulated that Riju’s hand was cut off following a hazard while making a bomb. CPI(M) cyber teams are competing to circulate the fake information,” Rema stated. She further alleged that this misinformation campaign was deliberately crafted to tarnish her reputation and that of her party ahead of crucial election results.

Following the incident, Riju was taken to Vadakara Cooperative Hospital for treatment of what was described as a minor injury. He has since corroborated Rema’s account, confirming that the accident occurred during family celebrations at his home.

“But CPI(M) cyber handles and leaders are claiming that bombs were being made as the election results will be announced soon. This is a fake narrative,” Riju said, refuting the allegations directly.

The timing of these allegations is particularly significant as they come in the aftermath of Assembly elections held on April 9, with results scheduled to be announced on May 4. Rema, the incumbent MLA from Vadakara, is once again a candidate, representing the Revolutionary Marxist Party which is aligned with the United Democratic Front (UDF), one of Kerala’s major political coalitions.

Political tensions in Kerala often run high during election periods, with the state having a history of fierce competition between the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPI(M), and the UDF, primarily led by the Indian National Congress. The RMP, though smaller, has maintained a significant presence in certain pockets, particularly in the Malabar region where Vadakara is located.

This incident highlights the increasingly contentious role of social media and digital communication in regional politics. Cyber teams and digital propaganda have become powerful tools in political battles across India, with Kerala being no exception. The spread of misinformation through digital platforms has emerged as a particular concern during election periods, potentially influencing voter perceptions and electoral outcomes.

The Vadakara constituency, located in north Kerala, has historically been a battleground between left and centrist political forces. The RMP itself was formed by former CPI(M) members who split from the party, adding another layer of complexity to the political rivalry.

Political analysts note that such accusations of bomb-making carry particular weight in Kerala, where political violence has occasionally marred the democratic process in certain districts. By invoking such imagery, the alleged misinformation campaign appears designed to associate the RMP with political violence and extremism.

As the state awaits election results, the incident underscores the increasingly complex information environment that voters must navigate, where distinguishing between legitimate news and politically motivated misinformation has become increasingly challenging. It also highlights the bitter political rivalries that continue to characterize Kerala’s vibrant but intensely competitive democratic landscape.
