‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ Crosses Historic ₹1000 Crore Mark Amid Controversy

Aditya Dhar’s blockbuster “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” has shattered box office records, becoming the first Bollywood film to cross the coveted ₹1000 crore milestone. The film achieved this unprecedented feat on its third Sunday in theaters, cementing its place in Indian cinema history.

Despite its commercial success, the film has sparked debate among viewers, with some critics labeling it as propaganda. This criticism, however, has done little to deter audiences who continue to flock to cinemas nationwide.

Actor-turned-politician Ravi Kishan has emerged as one of the film’s most vocal defenders. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Kishan strongly rejected the propaganda claims, calling such labels “very wrong” and unfair to the creative team behind the production.

“Calling it a propaganda film is very wrong! Actors from the South supported it openly, everyone should do that. A new trend has started of calling films propaganda, ek naya kabootar pakad liye hain log!” Kishan remarked, expressing frustration at what he sees as an unfair characterization of the film.

Kishan drew comparisons between “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” and the iconic 1975 classic “Sholay,” highlighting the current film’s similar larger-than-life impact on audiences. According to him, the film’s narrative draws heavily from real events, transforming news and historical incidents into compelling cinematic drama that resonates with viewers.

Beyond its artistic merits, Kishan emphasized the film’s crucial role in revitalizing an industry that has struggled in recent years, particularly following the pandemic. “Bahut haalat kharab thi industry ki. Bhojpuri industry has almost shut down! This has come as a blessing. Lakhs of people earn their livelihood through cinema,” he explained.

The film’s success represents more than just entertainment—it’s a financial lifeline for countless workers in an industry that employs hundreds of thousands across various disciplines, from actors and technicians to support staff and theater employees.

Kishan also defended the film’s historical approach, suggesting that cinema plays an important role in educating audiences. “It’s important that cinema presents what has and is happening in society. In fact, we need to correct our history as well, through research, and show those torn pages to the people. That truth needs to be brought in front of people,” he stated.

The success of “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” comes at a critical juncture for Bollywood, which has faced increasing competition from both international films and regional Indian cinema in recent years. Industry analysts note that big-budget spectacles with nationalist themes have performed particularly well at the box office over the past few years, reflecting changing audience preferences.

During the interview, Kishan also reflected on his own career journey, expressing confidence that his time for a major starring role will come. “I know someone somewhere must be writing a Dhurandhar for me. What’s in fate will come to me; this was not in my account,” he said.

When asked about his potential involvement in a future installment of the franchise, Kishan admitted he would have accepted any role offered to him, though he confessed a particular desire to play the character of Hazma, a role currently portrayed by Ranveer Singh.

Industry observers note that “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” represents a significant shift in Bollywood’s commercial strategy, with studios increasingly investing in patriotic narratives that appeal to mass audiences across both urban and rural markets.

As the film continues its record-breaking run, the debate around its content and messaging is likely to persist, highlighting the complex relationship between entertainment, politics, and history in contemporary Indian cinema.
