Concerns Rise Over Misinformation Following Minority Shopkeeper’s Murder

Bangladesh’s interim government warned Sunday that deliberate attempts to spread misinformation about recent incidents involving minority communities threaten the country’s communal harmony.

“Statements based on false or fabricated information can create confusion in society and pose risks to communal harmony,” said Foyez Ahammad, Senior Assistant Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

The warning comes amid growing controversy over the murder of Moni Chakraborty, a 40-year-old Hindu grocery shop owner who was hacked to death at Charsindur Bazar in Palash upazila of Narsingdi district on January 5. According to officials, unidentified assailants attacked Chakraborty with sharp weapons around 11:00 pm after he closed his shop and was returning to his home in Sadharchar Union, Shibpur upazila.

Ahammad expressed concern that the incident had been mischaracterized on social media and in public discourse as a religiously motivated attack, despite preliminary police investigations suggesting otherwise.

“Initial findings by police and statements from the victim’s family indicate no communal link in the killing,” Ahammad emphasized. “The investigation points toward a family feud and business rivalry as the likely motive behind the murder.”

The press secretary noted that because the victim belonged to a minority Hindu community in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, false information spread rapidly across social platforms, framing the incident as a targeted communal attack. Such mischaracterization, officials warned, risks inflaming tensions in a country with a history of occasional communal violence.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder also addressed various national issues during the briefing but reinforced the importance of responsible information sharing, particularly regarding sensitive matters involving minority communities.

Ahammad acknowledged that several prominent citizens had expressed concern and issued public statements about the murder. While recognizing their right to voice concerns, he urged public figures and citizens alike to verify information before making public declarations.

“If concerns arise over any incident, it is important to verify information and visit the scene if necessary,” he said. “The spread of misinformation and unverified statements could cause serious damage to social and communal harmony.”

The government’s response reflects heightened sensitivity toward communal issues in Bangladesh, where the interim administration, established after the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, has pledged to protect minority rights and maintain social cohesion.

Bangladesh has a population of approximately 170 million people, with Hindus constituting the largest religious minority at around 8 percent. Relations between religious communities have generally been peaceful in recent decades, though incidents of violence and property disputes affecting minorities have occasionally flared up, particularly during periods of political transition or unrest.

The Narsingdi murder case comes at a delicate time as the interim government works to establish stability following political upheaval earlier this year. Police officials have stated that the investigation into Chakraborty’s murder remains ongoing, with authorities pursuing multiple leads regarding the family and business disputes that might have motivated the attack.

Human rights organizations monitoring minority issues in Bangladesh have called for a thorough and transparent investigation, emphasizing that regardless of motive, violence against shopkeepers and small business owners affects community security and economic stability in local markets.

Local authorities in Narsingdi have reportedly increased security presence in market areas following the incident to reassure business owners and prevent any potential retaliatory actions based on misinformation.
