‘Slopaganda’: How AI-Generated LEGO Videos Are Reshaping Political Influence

Pro-Iran animations featuring LEGO-style characters have been rapidly gaining traction online, showcasing a new breed of propaganda that experts are calling “slopaganda” – high-quality, AI-generated content that can be produced and distributed at unprecedented speed.

The videos, created by a production company called Explosive News, feature colorful LEGO-style animations depicting U.S. President Donald Trump and other American political figures in scenarios designed to criticize U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran.

What makes these videos particularly effective is their sophisticated blend of entertainment and messaging. Set to catchy rap music that mimics contemporary hits, the animations are packed with internet memes, pop culture references, and humor that resonates with younger audiences. One rap lyric mocks Trump’s late-night social media habits with the line, “Bro, go to sleep.”

“When we see these adorable figures, it lowers our defenses,” explains Marcus Kolga, founder of DisinfoWatch and a leading expert on propaganda. “LEGO is universally known, and its characters are part of our worlds and connect with our sense of joy.”

Beyond their playful appearance, the videos make serious allegations against the United States, including claims that Trump prioritizes Israel’s interests over America’s and that the U.S. government harbors criminals. While entertaining, the content clearly aims to shape viewers’ perceptions about international relations.

The term “slopaganda” refers to propaganda that leverages artificial intelligence to produce high-quality content rapidly in response to current events. “We’re seeing these videos emerge very shortly after events transpire in Iran, sometimes just hours after,” Kolga notes, highlighting how AI has dramatically accelerated the propaganda production cycle.

This represents a significant shift from traditional propaganda efforts by authoritarian regimes, which often struggled to resonate with international audiences. By utilizing familiar cultural elements like LEGO characters and contemporary music styles, these videos can bypass the typical skepticism directed at foreign government messaging.

Media literacy experts emphasize that both sides in international conflicts often employ manipulation tactics. Matthew Johnson, director of education for MediaSmarts, points out that Trump has shared similar AI-generated content portraying his political opponents negatively, including a video showing him in a fighter jet “dumping poop” on protesters at a “No Kings” rally.

“One of the things that propaganda tries to do is make us think that there is one correct side to a story,” Johnson explains. “But the fact that we disapprove of one side doesn’t mean that the other side is right.”

The rise of “slopaganda” underscores the growing challenge of discerning reliable information in the digital age. Experts recommend several strategies for critical evaluation: being wary when content provokes strong emotional reactions, checking the source’s credibility before sharing, and consulting multiple reputable news outlets that adhere to journalistic standards of fact-checking and corrections.

Kolga warns that AI-generated propaganda represents “one of the biggest threats that AI poses to our democracies,” making critical thinking skills increasingly essential for all media consumers, especially young people who are often the target audience for such content.

The Iran-produced LEGO videos demonstrate how propaganda techniques are evolving to become more subtle and engaging. Rather than obvious falsehoods or heavy-handed messaging, modern propaganda often blends entertainment, humor, and partial truths, making it significantly more difficult to identify and resist.

As AI tools become more sophisticated and accessible, the line between legitimate creative expression and manipulative content continues to blur. Educators and media literacy advocates emphasize that developing critical thinking skills and consulting diverse, reputable sources remains the best defense against being influenced by increasingly sophisticated propaganda efforts.
