Portland Pizza Restaurant Sparks Controversy with Political Message on Website
A Portland, Oregon pizza establishment has found itself at the center of a heated controversy after posting an explicitly political message on its website that called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The restaurant, Tastebud, displayed the message as a pop-up that visitors encountered before they could subscribe to the newsletter.
“Ice out everywhere,” declared the notice, which went on to state: “Food is political. No one is illegal on stole land. F—k Ice. Abolish Ice.” The message then covered a range of other political topics, including references to Jeffrey Epstein files, Palestinian rights, Black Lives Matter, transgender issues, and the Holocaust.
The timing of the message is significant, appearing just weeks after the deaths of anti-ICE protesters Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. Good was fatally shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross last month, while Pretti, an ICU nurse who was also an armed protester, died after being shot by Customs and Border Protection officials approximately two weeks later. In a January 30 Facebook post, Tastebud reportedly characterized these deaths as murders “in plain sight.”
The political statement quickly went viral online, triggering a strong backlash from critics who accused the restaurant of prioritizing politics over its food service. Many commenters promised to boycott the establishment, leading to what the restaurant describes as “a surge of hateful, harassing, and abusive reviews, calls, and emails.”
A Tastebud spokesperson told Fox News that the negative response has raised concerns for “our staff, our family, and our guests,” while emphasizing that all diners are welcome at the restaurant.
In response to the backlash, Tastebud has significantly modified the message on its website. The revised statement removes specific references to President Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, replacing them with broader statements about the restaurant’s values. “Food is political because care has become political,” the updated message reads, adding that the establishment stands for “human rights, equality, science and collective care.”
The modified statement also includes more philosophical observations: “Waiting is not caution. Silence is not neutrality. Both are permission,” and “Our country does not survive because it is written down. It survives only if people refuse to endure its unraveling.”
The incident highlights the increasingly complex relationship between businesses and political expression in a polarized America. While some Portland establishments have embraced activism as part of their brand identity in a city known for its progressive politics, such explicit political messaging can alienate potential customers and create operational challenges for small businesses.
Restaurant industry analysts note that this type of controversy exemplifies the difficult balancing act that food service establishments face in today’s politically charged environment. Some businesses choose to remain strictly apolitical, while others view their platforms as opportunities to advocate for causes they support, accepting the potential business consequences that may follow.
For now, Tastebud continues to operate while navigating the aftermath of its controversial messaging, becoming a small but notable flashpoint in the broader national conversation about immigration enforcement, business practices, and the increasing intersection of politics with everyday commerce.

I’m curious to learn more about the restaurant’s motivations and reasoning behind their messaging. While I may not agree with all of their views, I think it’s important to try to understand their perspective before passing judgment. Open and respectful discourse is key to making progress on these divisive issues.
That’s a fair point. Dismissing or demonizing the other side is unlikely to lead to productive outcomes. I hope the restaurant is open to engaging in a thoughtful dialogue that considers multiple viewpoints.
This is a highly charged political issue. While I understand the restaurant’s desire to take a stand, I worry that such inflammatory messaging could alienate customers and lead to further division. Perhaps a more balanced, fact-based approach would be more constructive.
I agree. There are reasonable arguments on both sides of this debate, and shutting down dialogue is unlikely to change minds or move the discussion forward productively.
The restaurant’s message certainly grabs attention, but I worry it may do more to alienate potential customers than persuade them. A more measured, fact-based approach that invites dialogue rather than confrontation could be more effective in advancing their cause.
I agree. While passionate advocacy is understandable, in a divisive political climate, a calmer, more constructive tone may be more likely to sway hearts and minds.

This is a complex and sensitive issue without easy answers. I respect the restaurant’s right to free speech, but wonder if their approach will do more to inflame tensions than foster meaningful dialogue. Perhaps a more balanced, fact-based message could be more effective in changing minds.
Well said. Nuance and empathy are needed on all sides of this debate. I hope the restaurant can find a way to engage the community constructively rather than further dividing it.
