Pakistan’s Military Establishment Revives Efforts to Undermine Bangladesh’s Sovereignty

Nearly five decades after Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan following a bloody liberation war, alarming signals suggest Islamabad is attempting to reassert influence over its former eastern territory through coordinated disinformation campaigns and provocative rhetoric.

Security analysts have identified a sophisticated psychological warfare operation conducted by Pakistan’s military and intelligence apparatus that appears designed to challenge Bangladesh’s national identity and sovereign status.

The campaign became increasingly visible following political upheaval in Bangladesh last year, with Pakistani-linked media outlets and social media accounts promoting narratives that directly question Bangladesh’s independence and national symbols.

On December 24, a Facebook page calling itself “The Times” published content suggesting that “Bangladesh is considering changing its national flag by adding a crescent and a star,” accompanied by a manipulated image of the Bangladeshi flag. Investigation revealed the page, which has amassed over 288,000 followers, lists a Pakistani phone number among its administrators and appears linked to Pakistan’s intelligence community rather than any legitimate news organization.

The verification trail for this supposed news outlet leads only to an Instagram account with 88,000 followers, with no evidence of an actual journalistic entity behind either platform. The domain allegedly associated with this “news source” redirects to social media rather than a functional news website.

More concerning are direct provocations from Pakistani political figures. Kamran Sayeed Usmani, a youth leader from Pakistan’s ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), released a video positioning Bangladesh’s flag alongside Pakistan’s while threatening India with missile strikes should it “attack Bangladesh.” This symbolic positioning of the flags appears designed to suggest Bangladesh remains under Pakistan’s protection or influence.

“Such positioning amounts to a direct denial of Bangladesh’s sovereignty and disrespects the memory of the three million martyrs and hundreds of thousands of women who suffered during Pakistan’s genocidal campaign in 1971,” noted one South Asian security expert who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of their work.

In another incident, following the death of a political figure in Bangladesh, an obscure website called “Times of Islamabad” published allegations claiming India’s intelligence agency was responsible. Analysis of this outlet reveals it lacks credible journalistic credentials despite claiming “10 million monthly viewers,” with actual traffic estimates falling below 200,000 visits monthly.

The organization operates under corporate registration in Pakistan but appears to function primarily as a propaganda platform with “no visible newsroom, reporters, or editorial staff,” according to media watchdogs who track disinformation in South Asia.

International observers have expressed concern about Bangladeshi authorities’ muted response to these provocations. No official protests or diplomatic objections have been registered, creating what some analysts describe as a “dangerous vacuum” that could be interpreted as weakness.

“This isn’t merely online noise,” explained Dr. Shahid Rahman, a regional security expert at the South Asian Institute for Strategic Affairs. “Historical patterns show that attempts to undermine national sovereignty often begin with narrative manipulation before escalating to more direct challenges. The silence from Dhaka is concerning.”

The psychological warfare campaign appears carefully calibrated to normalize questioning Bangladesh’s independence among certain audiences while simultaneously provoking religious and nationalist sentiments. The strategy bears hallmarks of previous influence operations traced to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and its public relations wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

For Bangladesh, the situation presents a delicate challenge. The country has worked to balance regional relationships while strengthening its independent identity in the five decades since gaining freedom from Pakistan following a war that claimed millions of lives.

Human rights organizations and United Nations officials have repeatedly called for vigilance against attempts to rewrite history or undermine the sovereignty of nations in the region, particularly through coordinated disinformation campaigns that exploit social media platforms’ limited content moderation capabilities.

As tensions simmer, regional stability experts warn that confronting such propaganda operations requires coordinated diplomatic, media, and civil society responses that firmly reassert Bangladesh’s status as a sovereign nation whose independence was achieved through tremendous sacrifice.
