Widow of Pakistani Officer Criticizes Portrayal in Bollywood Film ‘Dhurandhar’
The widow of a prominent Pakistani police officer has voiced strong objections to her late husband’s portrayal in the recently released Bollywood action thriller “Dhurandhar,” threatening legal action against what she describes as disrespectful characterization.
Noreen Aslam, wife of the late Karachi Superintendent of Police Chaudhary Aslam Khan, expressed her disappointment during an appearance on a Dialogue Pakistan podcast following the film’s December 5 release. In the film, Sanjay Dutt plays a character based on her husband.
“My husband was a great admirer of Sanjay Dutt, especially after watching ‘Khalnayak’ in the 1990s,” Noreen revealed. “I believed Dutt would do justice to my husband’s strong personality in real life.”
However, after viewing the trailer, she was deeply upset by dialogue that reportedly describes her husband’s character as “the offspring of the devil and a djinn.” This characterization crossed a line for the widow, who found it not only insulting to her husband’s memory but also disrespectful to his mother.
“We are Muslims, and such words are disrespectful not only to Aslam but his mother, who was a simple, honest woman,” Noreen stated emphatically. She added a clear warning: “If I see my husband being portrayed wrongly or any propaganda against him in the film, I will definitely take all the legal steps I can.”
Her criticism extended beyond the specific portrayal to broader concerns about the film industry’s approach. “It is strange that Indian filmmakers find no other subjects but to malign Pakistan,” she noted.
The controversy comes as “Dhurandhar,” starring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, continues its successful box office run. The film has already surpassed the 100 crore rupee mark (approximately $12 million) in domestic receipts, demonstrating strong commercial appeal despite the brewing controversy.
Industry analysts note that “Dhurandhar” is part of a growing trend of Bollywood productions drawing inspiration from real-life incidents involving cross-border tensions. Such films often walk a delicate line between dramatic interpretation and historical accuracy, sometimes stirring diplomatic sensitivities in the process.
Chaudhary Aslam Khan was a high-profile figure in Pakistan’s law enforcement community before his death. Known for his tough stance against criminal elements, he had developed a reputation as a no-nonsense police officer who faced multiple threats throughout his career. His portrayal in international media has occasionally been a point of contention.
The film features an ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Sara Arjun alongside Singh and Dutt. “Dhurandhar” has been marketed as an action-packed thriller that draws inspiration from real events while taking creative liberties with characters and situations.
This controversy highlights the ongoing sensitivities surrounding cross-border portrayals in South Asian cinema, particularly when depicting real-life figures. Film industries in both India and Pakistan have historically grappled with how to represent complex geopolitical narratives without inflaming tensions or causing offense.
Representatives from the film’s production team have not yet responded to Noreen Aslam’s comments or indicated whether they plan to address her concerns about her husband’s characterization.
