Indian Social Media Accounts Spread False Claims About Pakistani Refinery Attack

Indian social media accounts have been caught fabricating news about an alleged attack on a Pakistani oil refinery, misrepresenting a deadly incident at a mining site in Balochistan province to spread disinformation, according to officials.

The false narrative began circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) when an account named @FrontalForce posted: “Pakistan national refinery in Balochistan was blown up by unidentified gunmen.” The post was quickly amplified across numerous Indian social media accounts, creating a misleading perception of events on the ground.

An investigation by Kashmir Media Service confirmed that no oil refinery was attacked or damaged in Balochistan. The fabricated claim appears to be a deliberate distortion of an actual violent incident that occurred on Wednesday, when gunmen attacked a mining project in southwestern Balochistan, killing at least nine employees, including two security guards.

Security officials familiar with the incident noted that while the attack was tragic, it targeted a mining operation rather than energy infrastructure, and there was no explosion or “blown up” facility as claimed in the viral posts. Pakistan has limited refining capacity concentrated in other regions, with no major refinery operating in the location mentioned in the false reports.

The spread of such misinformation highlights the growing challenge of cross-border digital propaganda in South Asia, where tensions between India and Pakistan frequently manifest in information warfare. Digital forensics experts point to increasingly sophisticated disinformation campaigns designed to inflame regional tensions and create false perceptions about security situations.

Balochistan province, Pakistan’s largest by area but least populated, has faced insurgent activity for years, with separatist groups occasionally targeting infrastructure and development projects. The region is strategically important as it hosts significant portions of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship initiative under China’s Belt and Road program worth billions of dollars in investment.

Pakistani officials have consistently alleged foreign involvement in Balochistan’s security challenges. Following this latest incident and the subsequent disinformation, Balochistan’s provincial government reiterated its position that “hostile foreign elements, particularly from India” are supporting terrorism in the province to undermine peace and development projects related to CPEC.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif have both publicly stated that attackers operating in Balochistan maintain links to India, though independent verification of such claims remains challenging in the complex geopolitical environment.

Media analysts note that this incident represents a pattern of weaponized disinformation that has become increasingly common in South Asian geopolitics. False claims about infrastructure attacks can affect investor confidence, create public panic, and potentially impact diplomatic relations between already tense neighbors.

The fabricated refinery attack story gained particular traction because energy security remains a sensitive issue in Pakistan, which relies heavily on imported oil and gas. The country has been working to expand its domestic refining capacity amid persistent energy shortages and balance of payment challenges.

Regional security experts warn that distinguishing between genuine security incidents and manufactured crises has become more difficult with the proliferation of unverified social media content, requiring heightened vigilance from both media organizations and the public when consuming news about sensitive geopolitical matters.

As authorities continue addressing the actual security situation following the mining site attack, efforts are underway to counter the spread of the false refinery attack narrative through official clarifications and media engagement.
