A watchdog organization has raised concerns over the content of children’s programming on Netflix, highlighting what they describe as a significant increase in LGBTQ+ themes in shows marketed to young audiences.
According to a new analysis released by Concerned Women for America, 41 percent of G-rated series and 41 percent of TV-Y7-rated series on the streaming platform contain content related to homosexuality and gender identity themes. The report states that across all age categories deemed appropriate for children, “33 percent contained LGBTQ+ characters, themes, story lines or messaging.”
The organization points to several examples of classic children’s franchises that have been updated with new content. Popular reboots of beloved series including “The Magic School Bus” and “The Fairly OddParents” now feature characters who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, according to the report.
One notable example cited is a new version of the 2000s children’s show “Strawberry Shortcake,” which reportedly introduces characters described as “transberries.” In one episode, the main character purchases a dress resembling the transgender pride flag for a friend who is characterized as “nonbinary.”
“Television producers are using their entertainment platforms to normalize LGBT values in the minds of very impressionable audiences, and it is becoming the rule, not the exception,” the report states. The authors argue that introducing these themes in children’s programming represents “a blatant attempt to change the culture” without parental involvement.
The findings come amid broader national debates about age-appropriate content for children across various media platforms. In 2022, similar controversies erupted around content produced by the Walt Disney Corporation, with critics questioning the introduction of certain themes in programming aimed at younger viewers.
Advocates for LGBTQ+ representation in media have previously argued that inclusive storytelling helps children from diverse backgrounds feel seen and accepted. They contend that representation in entertainment reflects the reality of diverse family structures that exist in society. However, critics counter that parents should maintain control over when and how these topics are introduced to their children.
The streaming landscape has become increasingly competitive, with platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and others vying for family audiences. Children’s content represents a crucial segment for these services, as family subscriptions tend to have higher retention rates. Nielsen data has consistently shown that children’s programming drives significant viewing hours across streaming platforms.
Netflix, which boasts over 230 million global subscribers, has invested heavily in children’s content in recent years. The company has not publicly responded to the specific findings in the report.
Media watchdog organizations have long monitored content aimed at children, but the streaming era presents new challenges for parents. Unlike traditional television with scheduled programming, streaming platforms offer on-demand access to vast libraries of content, making parental oversight more complex.
The report encourages parents to be vigilant about media consumption and to preview content before allowing children to watch. It also calls for more transparency from streaming services regarding the themes present in programming marketed to children.
As streaming continues to dominate home entertainment, these discussions about content, values, and parental choice are likely to remain at the forefront of cultural conversations about childhood development and media influence.
