A standoff with Stamford police on Tuesday ended in suicide after a 63-year-old man, facing eviction from his foreclosed home, exchanged gunfire with officers for hours. The aftermath revealed disturbing findings, including Nazi propaganda, explosives, and a decomposed body.

Police discovered Nazi paraphernalia inside the Oaklawn Avenue residence of Jed Parkington, who took his own life during the confrontation. Among the items visible through damaged sections of the home was a Nazi flag hanging on one wall and a handwritten slogan in German reading “Kapitulieren nein!” (meaning “no surrender”), which was used by Nazi forces during World War II. According to a source, these items represented just a portion of the Nazi-related materials inside the property.

The property at 263 Oaklawn Avenue showed significant damage from tactical operations. Police vehicles had torn away sections of the rear exterior to gain entry during the standoff, leaving gaping holes in the second floor. Outside the home, investigators found bottles that had been fashioned into Molotov cocktails, while the interior contained pipe bombs and grenades that had been set as booby traps.

The incident began Tuesday morning around 9:15 a.m. when a state marshal arrived to carry out an eviction order. Court records reveal that foreclosure proceedings initiated in 2018 after Parkington and his wife stopped making mortgage payments on the home they purchased in 2005. The protracted legal battle ended with the court awarding ownership to the bank, with the couple owing more than $700,000 including accumulated interest.

During the foreclosure proceedings, Parkington had submitted correspondence claiming he suffered from brain cancer and long COVID. Just one day before the scheduled eviction, his wife made a final plea to the court seeking a delay, citing multiple health conditions including diabetes, depression, and memory loss.

“They were in bad health. Both had some issues, health issues,” said Jon Gallup, a neighbor who lives nearby and who, ironically, had previously served as a process server helping the Parkingtons evict their own tenants. “I knew them from doing eviction work for them. They had some residents living in their house,” Gallup explained.

The discovery of a decomposed body on the second floor of the residence adds another disturbing element to the case. Police have confirmed the body is not that of Parkington’s wife, who managed to leave the home unharmed Tuesday morning before the standoff began. Authorities are still working to identify the remains and determine the cause of death.

The confrontation escalated just before noon on Tuesday when Parkington opened fire on two armored police vehicles. Throughout the afternoon, multiple exchanges of gunfire occurred between officers and Parkington. Photos of one police vehicle show numerous dents and a severely damaged windshield with multiple impact points.

“I will tell you when the video comes out, you’ll realize how close it was for that windshield to be penetrated, to the point we might’ve lost some officers’ lives,” Stamford Police Chief Tim Shaw stated during a news conference.

Police eventually entered the home after hearing a single gunshot and confirming via drone surveillance that Parkington was no longer alive. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reported Thursday that an autopsy determined Parkington died from a “gunshot wound of the head and neck” and ruled the manner of death as suicide.

While Stamford police are investigating the discovery of the decomposed body, the Office of the Inspector General is handling the investigation into the standoff and shooting, as required by state law when officers discharge their weapons. Body camera footage from the incident is expected to be released in the coming days.

A state contractor was scheduled to secure the property Thursday evening.
