NATO Chief Rutte Dismisses Russia’s Military Image, Compares Advance to “Garden Snail”
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has challenged Russia’s self-portrayal as a formidable military power, comparing its slow advance in Ukraine to a “garden snail” rather than the “powerful bear” depicted in Russian propaganda, according to Anadolu Agency reports on February 13.
During recent remarks, Rutte highlighted the substantial casualties Russia continues to suffer in its invasion of Ukraine, citing approximately 35,000 Russian soldiers killed in December alone, followed by around 30,000 in January.
“They want us to see the Russians as a mighty bear, but one could say they are advancing across Ukrainian territory at the clumsy pace of a garden snail,” Rutte stated, urging the public to resist Russian propaganda narratives designed to exaggerate Moscow’s military capabilities.
The NATO chief emphasized the importance of the strengthened relationship between NATO and the European Union, noting that coordination between the two organizations has reached unprecedented levels, particularly regarding support for Ukraine. This enhanced cooperation has become a cornerstone of the Western response to Russia’s aggression since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Reflecting on the NATO defense ministers meeting held in Brussels on February 12, Rutte observed a significant “shift in thinking” within the alliance, particularly among European member states. He pointed to increased defense spending as a notable development.
“For years, for decades, the United States complained that Europe was not spending enough on defense. That changed after the Hague summit,” Rutte remarked, referring to the recent NATO gathering in the Netherlands. The Secretary General described this development as a “truly impressive change that strengthens NATO,” adding that “a stronger Europe and a stronger alliance reinforce the transatlantic bond like never before.”
These comments come as world leaders gather at the Munich Security Conference, running from February 13 to 15 in Germany. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already arrived for the summit, where he plans to launch the first joint Ukrainian-German drone production enterprise and conduct several bilateral and multilateral meetings with international partners.
The conference represents a crucial diplomatic forum for Ukraine as it seeks to maintain and strengthen Western support in its ongoing defense against Russian aggression. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated he intends to meet with Zelenskyy during the conference, underscoring continued American engagement with Ukraine’s leadership.
Rutte’s characterization of Russia’s military performance comes at a time when Western defense analysts have increasingly noted Russia’s high casualty rate and relatively slow territorial gains despite committing substantial resources to the conflict. These assessments contrast sharply with the image of military prowess that Russian state media continues to project domestically and internationally.
The NATO Secretary General’s remarks align with broader Western efforts to counter Russian information operations while maintaining solidarity in support of Ukraine as the conflict approaches its third year with no immediate signs of resolution.
