Mexican Journalists’ Club Exposed as Hub for Russian Propaganda
A comprehensive cross-border investigation has revealed that the Mexican Journalists’ Club has become a key distribution center for Russian propaganda in Latin America, according to findings published by Factchequeado in collaboration with Mexican journalists and the International Center for Journalists’ Disarming Disinformation program.
The investigation, dubbed “Putin’s Laundromat,” analyzed over 4,500 articles published on the Mexican Journalists’ Club website between March 2020 and September 2025, along with recent editions of the club’s magazine, award recipients since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the organization’s judging panel and workshops.
“The content we are publishing today is the result of months of collaborative and cross-border work. What we have managed to document is that Russia has a partner in Mexico that launders its content and narratives and has received Mexican public funds,” said Laura Zommer, CEO of Factchequeado.
The investigation’s findings reveal a concerning pattern of the club serving as a conduit for Russian state interests in the region. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the club has primarily awarded its international prizes to Russian propagandists and disinformers worldwide.
Among the recipients are Moscow-funded media outlet Tsargrad, which is linked to Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev, who currently faces criminal charges in the United States. Other controversial awardees include Alex Jones, who was convicted of defamation in 2022, and influencer Jackson Hinkle, known for promoting pro-Russian disinformation across social media platforms.
Rafael Olavarría, a Factchequeado journalist who co-authored the investigation, explained the broader context: “The Journalists’ Club does not operate in a vacuum: it fits in with Moscow’s behavior, which, since the Cold War, has sought to influence Mexico through local actors to amplify its narratives and influence. Today, we are documenting the digital version of this historic strategy, which also impacts Latinos on both sides of the border.”
The series of reports examines multiple facets of the operation, including how the club’s website systematically “launders” information from Russian state media by republishing it without proper attribution or context, making propaganda appear as legitimate news to Spanish-speaking audiences.
Particularly troubling is the revelation that the club’s magazine, which features content from international disinformers, has received funding from Mexican public institutions. This suggests potential misuse of taxpayer resources to support foreign influence operations within Mexico.
The investigation also documented the physical presence of the club in Mexico City, where its headquarters reportedly serves dual purposes – as both a propaganda center and, surprisingly, a wedding venue. This unusual arrangement raises questions about the organization’s actual operations and financial model.
Beyond Mexico, the investigation tracked how Russian propaganda efforts have expanded throughout Latin America through workshops, street promotions, and alleged covert operations, creating a network of influence that extends across the Spanish-speaking world.
The investigation places these activities in historical context, tracing Moscow’s interest in Mexico from the Soviet era to present day, demonstrating how digital disinformation tactics have evolved from traditional Cold War influence operations.
Media analysts note that Russia’s information operations in Latin America have intensified in recent years as the Kremlin seeks to counter Western narratives about its foreign policy, particularly regarding the Ukraine conflict. The targeting of Spanish-speaking populations represents a strategic effort to shape public opinion in regions where Russia sees opportunity to expand its influence.
Factchequeado, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing information gaps for the 68 million Latinos in the United States and beyond, conducted the investigation as part of its mission to expand access to verified content and strengthen Spanish-language media through innovation and collaboration.
The complete investigation includes seven detailed reports examining different aspects of the Mexican Journalists’ Club’s operations and its role in Russia’s broader disinformation ecosystem.
