In a poignant reflection on his military service, Israeli reserve officer Ran Bar-Yoshafat shared his firsthand experiences fighting in Gaza over the past two years, offering a stark contrast to what he describes as widespread misinformation about Israel’s military operations.

Bar-Yoshafat, an attorney and doctoral candidate in history, recounts how the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack forced him to abandon his planned wedding celebration. Instead of the traditional large Israeli ceremony with hundreds of guests, he married in a small hall with just a handful of attendees before quickly returning to military duty.

“My own experience in Gaza exceeded anything I had imagined,” Bar-Yoshafat writes. “Even before October 7, I was not naïve. But I did not imagine anything like what I saw there.”

He directly challenges narratives about Israel’s military conduct, citing Hamas’s own casualty figures of approximately 70,000 deaths over two years, during which the Israeli Air Force targeted roughly 70,000 sites. Bar-Yoshafat argues these numbers refute claims of indiscriminate violence, noting Israel’s capabilities could inflict far greater damage if extermination were the objective.

According to Bar-Yoshafat, Israel’s military operations have been deliberately measured, with warnings issued in Arabic before strikes and time provided for civilian evacuation. He attributes the prolonged nature of the conflict partly to these precautions, claiming Israel has achieved “one of the most favorable civilian-to-combatant casualty ratios ever recorded in an urban war of this kind.”

His account details Hamas’s extensive infrastructure, including sophisticated tunnel networks “wide enough for vehicles to pass through, stretching for kilometers,” equipped with storage rooms, computer labs, and command centers. More controversially, he asserts that “without exception, every house contained either Nazi propaganda, materials inciting hatred against Israel, ammunition, rifles, explosives, rockets, grenades, or other instruments of war.”

Bar-Yoshafat describes discovering weapons hidden in civilian locations—sniper rifles concealed in teddy bears at UNRWA schools, rocket launchers in hospitals, and Nazi literature including Arabic translations of “Mein Kampf.” He reports witnessing Hamas fighters forcing civilians into restricted areas at gunpoint.

While acknowledging civilian suffering in Gaza as “heartbreaking,” the reserve officer places responsibility with Hamas and other militant groups, claiming they endangered their own population through three mechanisms: directly harming children (including allegedly forcing Gazan children to dig tunnels), planting explosives in civilian areas, and using civilian infrastructure for military operations.

He challenges Israel’s initial framing of fighting solely against Hamas, stating: “Israel is not fighting only Hamas; Global Jihad, ISIS, and other terrorist organizations are present as well.” Despite eliminating “tens of thousands of militants,” he claims Hamas maintains approximately 40,000 fighters through continuous recruitment, suggesting widespread support among Gazans.

Bar-Yoshafat also addresses what he calls conspiracy theories about Israeli influence in Washington, arguing that “far from being unconstrained by U.S. backing, Israel operates under significant American pressure,” with the United States “actively regulating the scope and degree of force Israel is permitted to use.”

The personal toll of his service included financial hardship, academic setbacks, and family strain. He recounts being in Gaza during his wife’s ninth month of pregnancy, briefly leaving combat to witness his child’s birth before immediately returning to duty.

Now celebrating Hanukkah with his family, Bar-Yoshafat hopes to “spread light and truth across the world,” offering his testimony as a counterpoint to what he characterizes as dangerous falsehoods about Israel’s actions in Gaza.

His account provides a deeply personal perspective on a conflict that continues to generate intense international debate over military conduct, civilian protection, and the complexities of urban warfare amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis.
