Russian Orthodox Church Clergy Join Military Personnel in Teaching War Tactics to Children

The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council has revealed that Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) priests are actively participating in war propaganda efforts targeting children across Russia, alongside military veterans.

According to the CCD report, Sunday school classes at a church in the Sverdlovsk region recently featured Russian counterintelligence military personnel who instructed children in handling automatic rifles, grenade launchers, and knives. The sessions included demonstrations of various military ammunition alongside the delivery of state-backed propaganda narratives.

“After the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin systematically implements war propaganda and militarization in school and extracurricular education. ROC priests are actively involved in this,” the CCD stated in their findings.

This development represents a growing trend in Russia’s education system, where propaganda indoctrination and military training are increasingly becoming central components. Analysts suggest this shift signals the Russian government’s intention to prepare a continuous reserve of personnel for its armed forces, starting from an early age.

The involvement of the Russian Orthodox Church in military propaganda marks a significant development in the relationship between the Russian state and its dominant religious institution. Historically, the ROC has maintained close ties with the Kremlin, but its direct participation in militarizing youth education represents an escalation in this partnership.

The Sverdlovsk region, located in the Ural Mountains and home to over 4.3 million people, has emerged as one focal point for these activities. The region hosts significant military production facilities and has strategic importance within Russia’s industrial heartland.

Religious education in Russia has expanded considerably in recent years, with Sunday schools becoming increasingly common. These institutions, originally focused on religious instruction, are now apparently being utilized as additional venues for military training and nationalist indoctrination.

The CCD report also referenced a recent meeting of the “Russian People’s Council,” where Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, allegedly justified Russian military actions and offered his own interpretation of the commandment “Thou shalt not kill.” Patriarch Kirill has been a vocal supporter of Russia’s military objectives since the beginning of the invasion.

Military experts note that the introduction of weapons training to children represents a concerning development in Russia’s broader militarization efforts. The normalization of military equipment and combat tactics among young people could have long-lasting societal impacts beyond immediate military recruitment goals.

The Ukrainian security authorities further highlighted that the Russian Orthodox Church has been actively militarizing occupied Ukrainian territories, providing support to Russian Federation military units operating in those areas.

This systematic militarization of youth through religious institutions comes amid Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, which has continued for more than two and a half years. International human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern about the involvement of children in military training programs, citing violations of children’s rights conventions.

Educational analysts point out that Russia’s focus on militarized youth programs draws on Soviet-era traditions while incorporating new elements of religious authority to strengthen ideological messaging. The combination of spiritual and military instruction creates a powerful framework for indoctrination that can be difficult for young people to question.

As Russia continues to mobilize various societal institutions in support of its military objectives, the involvement of the church in military training programs highlights the comprehensive nature of the state’s approach to maintaining public support for its foreign policy actions.
