Russian Media Distorts King Charles III’s Congressional Address on Ukraine Support

Russian state and pro-Kremlin media outlets have significantly misrepresented King Charles III’s recent address to the U.S. Congress, falsely claiming that the British monarch called for America to prepare for war with Russia.

In his actual speech, King Charles made no direct reference to Russia. Instead, he emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine to achieve what he described as a “just and lasting peace.” The King highlighted the historic cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States, noting that the two nations had stood “shoulder to shoulder” through major global conflicts including both World Wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan, and other security challenges.

“Today… that same, unyielding resolve is needed for the defence of Ukraine and her most courageous people,” King Charles stated in his address.

Despite the clear context and content of the speech, numerous Russian media outlets deliberately reframed the monarch’s words as a direct call for military confrontation with Moscow. Komsomolskaya Pravda, a pro-Kremlin newspaper, falsely reported that “[King] Charles called on the US to prepare for war with Russia and activate Article 5 of NATO.” Meanwhile, Zvezda published a headline claiming the King had urged preparations for conflict.

This narrative was echoed across other Russian publications including Moskovsky Komsomolets and the ultranationalist broadcaster Tsargrad, all alleging that the speech amounted to a Western declaration of hostile intent toward Russia.

Aleksei Zhivov, a Kremlin-aligned war commentator, pushed this distortion even further, claiming the speech demonstrated that Britain was “dragging the global democrats into a major conflict with Russia.” He ominously warned that “a major war with the West awaits us,” while suggesting Russia should “deal with Ukraine now, while Europe is not yet ready for a long war with us.”

TV Tsargrad described the King’s address as “an openly militaristic speech,” falsely reporting that “the monarch called on the American government to prepare for war with Russia.” The outlet concluded that “the British Crown is still trying to get ahead of the game in whipping up Russophobic war hysteria.”

One Telegram channel called Nevolfovich drew a historically inaccurate parallel: “1946. Winston Churchill’s speech in Fulton, California, marked the beginning of the Cold War. 2026. Charles III openly called for preparations for war with Russia in the US Congress. The British monarch received a standing ovation.” This statement contains multiple factual errors, as Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain” speech was delivered in Fulton, Missouri (not California) and the date referenced for King Charles’s speech is incorrectly placed in the future.

These mischaracterizations align with a well-established pattern in Russian state media of framing Western support for Ukraine as evidence of aggressive intentions toward Russia itself. This narrative has been consistently deployed since the invasion began as a means to justify Moscow’s actions and build domestic support for the war.

The Kremlin has repeatedly accused Western governments of using Ukraine as a proxy to wage war against Russia, while Western leaders maintain their assistance is focused solely on defending Ukrainian sovereignty and deterring further Russian aggression in the region.

This incident is part of a broader trend where Kremlin-controlled media deliberately reinterprets Western political speeches, often removing critical context and recasting statements as direct threats to Russia’s security and interests.
