In a dramatic turn of events that has rocked the Tamil film industry, actor-politician Kasthuri Shankar has claimed that the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party is responsible for delaying the release of “Jana Nayagan,” the farewell film of actor Vijay, who recently launched his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The high-definition version of “Jana Nayagan” was leaked online just days ago, creating a significant setback for Vijay as he prepares to make his political debut in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The leak has sent shockwaves through the industry, with experts estimating potential financial losses between Rs 300 crore and Rs 400 crore.

Shankar admitted to viewing portions of the leaked film that were circulated through WhatsApp and other platforms. “I have seen bits and pieces of the movie that people have forwarded to me. From what I understand, if the public watches it, it will benefit the TVK, not the BJP or the DMK — the parties Vijay is blaming,” she said.

Describing “Jana Nayagan” as “TVK’s three-hour propaganda,” Shankar suggested the film was designed specifically to boost public support for Vijay’s political ambitions. Her comments point to the increasingly blurred lines between Tamil cinema and politics, a longstanding tradition in the state that has produced several film-star-turned-politicians including former Chief Ministers M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa.

Shankar raised suspicions about possible insider involvement in the leak, noting the unusually high quality of the pirated version. “It is clear that whoever leaked the movie wanted every word of their propaganda to reach the people,” she stated. She also questioned whether authorities such as the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting or the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) might have played a role, adding, “I hear the film is available in perfect quality, without any censored cuts or modifications.”

In her most pointed accusation, Shankar directly blamed the DMK government for blocking the film’s theatrical release, suggesting the ruling party deliberately stalled it to coincide with the release of another political film, “TN 2026.” Released on April 10, “TN 2026” is a Tamil political satire that many viewers and TVK supporters believe parodies Vijay’s political journey.

“If people watch this film, it will influence them and benefit TVK. Anything else said by Vijay or his party leaders is just optics to distract from the real perpetrators,” Shankar asserted.

The controversy highlights the intense political rivalry brewing in Tamil Nadu as Vijay transitions from cinema to politics. As one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars with a massive fan following, his entry into politics represents a significant shift in the state’s political landscape and a potential threat to established parties like the DMK.

Law enforcement has already taken action following the leak. Chennai Cyber Crime police have arrested six individuals in connection with the case after receiving a complaint from KVN Productions, the film’s producer. Authorities have also blocked over 300 infringing links in an attempt to contain the damage.

The incident has prompted calls from prominent figures in the Tamil film industry for stronger anti-piracy measures. Piracy has long plagued the Indian film industry, with digital leaks becoming increasingly sophisticated and damaging to box office returns.

For Vijay, the leak comes at a particularly crucial moment as he balances his final film appearance with his emerging political career. His newly formed TVK party has positioned itself as an alternative in Tamil Nadu’s traditionally bipolar political arena dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.

As investigations continue into the source of the leak, the incident has already transformed “Jana Nayagan” from merely a film into a politically charged symbol in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political narrative, where cinema and politics have historically shared a complex and influential relationship.
