Woman in Karnataka Seer Sexual Harassment Case Recants Allegations

In a dramatic reversal that has shaken Karnataka’s religious community, a woman who previously filed sexual harassment allegations against prominent Lingayat seer Basava Jayamrutyunjaya Swamiji has now withdrawn her claims, asserting that both her name and the religious leader’s were misused in what she describes as “false propaganda.”

The woman, who had reportedly disappeared following her initial complaint, released a video statement from an undisclosed location on Monday, claiming that the allegations against the seer were fabricated. In her statement, she promised to appear before the media “at an appropriate time soon” to clarify the situation.

“I will return in four to five days to provide complete details regarding this matter,” she stated in the video.

The accuser has also addressed a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G. Parameshwara, alleging that “certain miscreants” orchestrated a deliberate campaign to spread false information about both her and the seer. She emphatically stated that all accusations made against them were “completely baseless and untrue.”

This unexpected development adds a significant twist to a case that had captured public attention across the state, especially given the seer’s prominence within the influential Lingayat community, which represents a substantial voting bloc in Karnataka politics.

Basava Jayamrutyunjaya Swamiji serves as the head of the Kudalasangama Panchamasali Peetha, a revered religious institution. He has been a leading figure in the ongoing agitation seeking reservation benefits for the Lingayat Panchamasali community, making him not just a religious leader but also a figure with considerable political influence.

The initial allegations against the seer were serious and wide-ranging. Letters circulated to the media claimed the woman had formally accused him of rape, sexual assault, harassment, and blackmail in complaints supposedly submitted to several authorities, including the Chief Minister, the Home Minister, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, and the State Women’s Commission.

He filed a counter-complaint against the woman in Vijayapura district, claiming she was acting under political influence to defame him.
