Karnataka BJP President Accuses State Government of Spreading Misinformation
Karnataka BJP President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra launched a strong critique against the Congress-led state government on Saturday, accusing it of deliberately misleading the public about Central government initiatives and creating misconceptions among citizens.
Speaking at a press conference in Bengaluru, Vijayendra specifically defended the Central government’s VB-GRAM G scheme, questioning whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s substantial investment of “several lakh crore rupees” for rural development should be criticized. The scheme aims to strengthen rural infrastructure and improve living conditions in villages across India.
“The BJP and JD(S) will not allow Congress propaganda to go unchallenged,” Vijayendra asserted. He announced plans to conduct grassroots outreach, explaining the facts about Central schemes directly to citizens and party workers at the village level.
The BJP state president welcomed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to convene a special Assembly session to discuss the VB-GRAM G scheme, stating that his party is prepared for a substantive debate on the issue. “Let us discuss what the Congress did through MNREGA over the years and what achievements we have made in the last 10 years under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership,” he challenged.
Vijayendra emphasized that the scheme represents a significant investment of approximately Rs 7-8 lakh crore aimed at fulfilling Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj (village self-governance). He highlighted specific improvements, including an increase in guaranteed workdays from 100 to 125 days, suggesting this demonstrates the Central government’s commitment to rural employment.
Addressing concerns about local autonomy, Vijayendra clarified that decision-making powers will remain at the gram panchayat level, contradicting claims that the Central government is centralizing authority. “The Central government under Prime Minister Modi has not taken away the authority of gram panchayats,” he stated.
The BJP leader contrasted the Modi government’s approach with previous Congress administrations, alleging that “the Congress party, which ruled the country for 55 to 60 years, never believed in schemes but only believed in scams.” He claimed that various financial scandals during Congress rule and the UPA tenure prevented India from emerging as a developed nation, though he refrained from elaborating on specific cases such as the 2G spectrum and coal allocation controversies.
This confrontation highlights the ongoing political tension in Karnataka, where the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah has frequently criticized Central policies. The dispute over rural development schemes reflects broader disagreements about federalism, financial allocations to states, and the implementation of national programs.
Karnataka’s political landscape remains divided along party lines, with the BJP-JD(S) alliance positioning itself as a check on the Congress administration. The planned special Assembly session will likely intensify the debate over rural development priorities and federal-state relations.
The press conference was attended by several prominent opposition figures, including Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashoka, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, JD(S) Legislature Party leader Suresh Babu, JD(S) Youth Wing State President Nikhil Kumaraswamy, and BJP State Chief Spokesperson C.N. Ashwathnarayan, demonstrating a united front within the opposition alliance.
The dispute underscores the crucial role of rural development programs in India’s political narrative, where competing visions for village governance and economic progress continue to shape state and national politics.
