Bodies Line Streets of Tehran as Iran’s Protest Death Toll Mounts
Disturbing videos showing lines of body bags outside Tehran’s morgue facilities have provided a rare window into the devastating human cost of Iran’s recent protests, as the country slowly emerges from an internet blackout imposed by authorities.
The footage, independently verified as being recorded outside the Kahrizak Forensic Medical Centre in Tehran, reveals distraught families searching for loved ones among rows of corpses. Some can be seen wailing beside lifeless bodies, creating graphic and emotionally charged scenes that underscore the mounting death toll.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) estimates approximately 250 bodies were visible in these videos alone. The organization has documented nearly 500 protester deaths but anticipates this number will rise significantly as investigations continue. The actual death toll remains unknown, as Iran’s government does not publish official figures.
“These videos have both heightened public concern over the death toll and significantly strengthened the capacity of human rights organizations to verify death cases,” HRANA stated.
The protests, which began on December 28 in response to economic hardships and deteriorating living conditions, quickly spread across Iran and evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations challenging the clerical leadership that has ruled since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In response, authorities have detained thousands while hundreds have been killed in the crackdown.
Iranian state media has attributed the deaths to “armed terrorists,” with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claiming Monday that protesters were attempting to provide a pretext for US intervention. President Donald Trump has already threatened to take action against Iran’s violent suppression of the demonstrations.
HRANA reports that 47 military or law enforcement officers have also been killed during the unrest, with Iranian state television broadcasting several of their funeral processions.
The unusual public display of bodies has raised suspicions among Iran experts. During previous protests, authorities typically removed bodies of killed demonstrators from public view—seizing remains from hospitals, burying them in unmarked locations, and restricting funerals to prevent them becoming rallying points.
“This is purely psychological warfare to scare people,” said Soheil, an Iranian blogger and civil activist speaking from Turkey. “When we were out there [in 2022], the ones they killed were taken away and the bodies weren’t handed over to their families for a long time. They made up excuses.”
Saba Vasefi, a human rights journalist and scholar at the University of Sydney, notes that Iran has a long history of using victims’ remains as instruments of oppression against their families.
“Reports indicate that families were coerced to compensate for the bullets that executed their relatives, an extortionist tactic historically embedded in Iran’s theocratic apparatus,” Vasefi explained. “These acts are part of a systemic, deliberate, deterrence-based, state-sponsored terrorism.”
Additional reports suggest that families are being unable to locate deceased loved ones after state authorities buried remains far from the place of death. In other cases, the regime allegedly holds bodies until family members agree to the narrative that their relative was not a protester but a government representative.
“Whether the source of videos showing the line of victims on the ground, with the lament of their families in the background, were circulated by protesters themselves, leaked from within the system, [or] deliberately released by the state to intimidate requires investigation,” Vasefi said.
Despite the internet blackout, some footage of protests and confrontations with revolutionary guards is beginning to emerge through those with brief moments of connectivity. Australian-based activist Farid Motlagh maintains contact with a network inside Iran that has established underground support systems since earlier protests.
“A lot of people got injured and instead of going to the hospital, they would stay in the home and the doctors would go and visit them, so that’s how the network started,” Motlagh explained. During periods between protests, the network focused on bringing Starlink equipment into Iran to maintain communications.
On Monday, Foreign Minister Araghchi announced that internet services across the country would be restored, though the regime reportedly employed interference hardware to degrade Starlink signals during the blackout.
As Iran slowly reconnects with the outside world, the full scale of the bloodshed may yet come to light, despite what many activists believe is a calculated strategy of intimidation through the public display of the dead.
