Immigration officials have arrested two Los Angeles-based relatives of a deceased Iranian military leader, citing concerns over their social media activities and alleged support for the Iranian regime while enjoying privileged lives in the United States.

Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and her daughter Sarinasadat Hosseiny were taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents last Friday. According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, their green cards were revoked due to Afshar’s “outspoken” support of what he described as the “totalitarian, terrorist regime in Iran.”

Federal authorities identified the women as the niece and grand-niece of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike during the final days of President Trump’s first term. This family connection has become a point of contention, with the general’s daughter disputing the relationship through Iranian media, calling the State Department’s claims a “lie.”

The arrests have drawn attention to the apparent contradiction between the women’s public lifestyle and their alleged political sympathies. Screenshots of their social media accounts, which have since been deactivated, showed Soleimani Afshar regularly posting images of herself in designer clothes, riding in luxury vehicles like Hummers, and posing for glamour photographs in short dresses. Her daughter reportedly shared similar content, sometimes of an even more provocative nature.

This Western lifestyle stands in stark contrast to the strict dress codes and behavioral restrictions imposed on women in Iran, where showing hair in public is forbidden. The dissonance between these values and the women’s apparent online support for the Iranian regime has drawn criticism from social media users.

“She hates America,” wrote one commenter about Soleimani Afshar’s arrest. “I can’t wait to see what she wears back home.”

A Los Angeles resident, Maziar Aflaki, who claims to have met Soleimani Afshar through mutual acquaintances, expressed support for the arrests. As a critic of the Iranian regime, he told The Times that the women “do not deserve to live in the U.S.” because of Soleimani Afshar’s pro-Iranian statements online. Aflaki also claimed that Soleimani Afshar had previously shown him photographs of herself with high-ranking Iranian military officials, including the one she identified as her uncle.

According to Rubio’s statement, Soleimani Afshar had “promoted Iranian regime propaganda, celebrated attacks against American soldiers and military facilities in the Middle East, praised the new Iranian Supreme Leader, denounced America as the ‘Great Satan,’ and voiced her unflinching support for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a designated terror organization.”

The Trump administration has taken a firm stance on the matter. “The Trump Administration will not allow our country to become a home for foreign nationals who support anti-American terrorist regimes,” Rubio stated.

Immigration records show that Soleimani Afshar entered the U.S. in 2015 on a tourist visa, was granted asylum in 2019, and received her green card in 2021. Her daughter arrived on a student visa, also received asylum in 2019, and was granted a green card in 2023.

The Department of Homeland Security noted that Soleimani Afshar had traveled to Iran four times since receiving asylum, which they cited as evidence that her asylum claims were “fraudulent.” This information was reportedly disclosed in her application for U.S. citizenship last year.

Both women are currently being held at an ICE detention facility in Pearsall, Texas, according to a searchable database of immigration detainees.

The case highlights the complex intersection of immigration policy, national security concerns, and the monitoring of social media activity by federal authorities, particularly for individuals with potential connections to governments considered hostile to U.S. interests.
