Iran’s government officials have reassured the international community that the country remains stable despite recent protests, with specific assurances that Indian citizens in Iran are safe.

The Iranian Consulate General in Hyderabad issued a statement confirming that comprehensive safety measures are in place to protect all foreign nationals, including the significant Indian expatriate community residing in the country.

“The situation in Iran is stable, and there is no cause for concern regarding the safety of Indian citizens,” the Consulate stated in its official release. The statement comes amid growing international attention on demonstrations across various Iranian cities.

According to the Consulate, the protests currently taking place in Iran are primarily driven by economic concerns rather than political grievances. The statement referenced Article 27 of Iran’s Constitution, which explicitly grants citizens the right to peaceful assembly and protest—a right that officials say is being respected during the current unrest.

The Consulate emphasized that the demonstrations have been acknowledged as legitimate by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, suggesting that the government views the economic concerns of protesters as valid.

However, Iranian officials have taken issue with international media coverage of the events. The Consulate accused unnamed foreign entities of attempting to politicize the protests and claimed that certain media outlets have been circulating misinformation designed to inflame public sentiment both within Iran and internationally.

“Foreign parties are using this opportunity to spread false information and manipulate public opinion,” the statement read. This reflects a common stance from Iranian authorities when facing international scrutiny during periods of internal unrest.

The Consulate specifically rejected reports that suggested Iran’s Supreme Leader was considering leaving the country, describing such claims as “completely unfounded” and part of a “propaganda campaign” against the Islamic Republic. Ayatollah Khamenei has led Iran since 1989 and remains the country’s most powerful figure, with ultimate authority over all major state decisions.

Iran-India relations have remained relatively stable despite various geopolitical challenges in the region. India has maintained economic ties with Iran even during periods of international sanctions, particularly in energy imports and infrastructure development projects such as the Chabahar Port.

The reassurance from Iranian officials comes at a time when economic pressures within Iran have intensified. The country continues to face significant economic challenges stemming from international sanctions, currency devaluation, and high inflation rates that have affected everyday citizens.

Iran has experienced several waves of protests in recent years, with demonstrations in 2019 and 2022 drawing particular attention from the international community. The current protests appear to be focused primarily on economic hardships rather than the broader political and social issues that characterized previous movements.

The Consulate concluded its statement with an appeal to media professionals, urging them to verify information through “credible sources” before publication. It also expressed its willingness to maintain open channels of communication with Indian media outlets to ensure accurate reporting on developments within Iran.

For Indian citizens with interests or connections in Iran, the statement offers some reassurance, though the situation continues to evolve. Iran hosts thousands of Indian students, business professionals, and pilgrims visiting religious sites throughout the year.

As the protests continue, international observers remain attentive to both the Iranian government’s response to demonstrators and the accuracy of information coming from the region.
