Popular Twitch Streamer Stirs Controversy with Pro-China Comments on State Media

Left-wing internet personality Hasan Piker has sparked debate after appearing on Chinese state television where he praised the communist nation and claimed he wanted to dispel “rumors” and “misunderstandings” about China.

During an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), a state-controlled media outlet, Piker described China as “just another normal country, just like every other country is,” while suggesting that the Western world harbors misconceptions about the nation.

“I also wanted to show my audience and the Western world in general that there are a lot of rumors about China, there’s a lot of misunderstandings and also just outright lies,” Piker told CGTN host Li Jingjing. “This has been a dream come true for me.”

CGTN, which published a report on Piker’s visit Thursday, highlighted the streamer’s significant online following of 4.5 million across Twitch and YouTube platforms. The network characterized his reach among young Americans as something “mainstream media could only dream of,” emphasizing how he frequently discusses China on his streams.

The state media outlet described Piker as someone who shares “dimensions of the greater China story that Western audiences rarely get to hear about,” from governance structures to development initiatives.

During his visit, Piker was filmed enthusiastically watching the ceremonial sunrise flag-raising near Mao Zedong’s portrait at Tiananmen Square. “This is awesome,” he remarked. “I don’t have any sort of patriotism in my heart… for America.”

His trip wasn’t without incident, however. Chinese authorities briefly stopped Piker during a livestream after his companion, Will Neff—described as a “banking scion turned anti-capitalist influencer”—displayed an AI-generated meme showing Piker’s face superimposed on Mao’s body.

Human rights organizations have consistently criticized CGTN for its role in Chinese state propaganda, particularly regarding coverage of Xinjiang, where international observers have documented widespread human rights abuses against the Uyghur population. The network has published multiple pieces attempting to refute reports of mass arbitrary detentions, forced sterilizations, involuntary organ harvesting, and unethical medical experiments in the region.

In a 2021 piece, CGTN claimed that reports of Uyghur persecution “dampen the lives [Uyghurs] are living now and aim to hamper the region’s peace and stability.” The network’s portrayal of Xinjiang has been inconsistent—in May describing it as “revitalized” with “smiling” and “happy” residents, while previously acknowledging “horrific stabbings and bombings” that had “rocked the land.”

Piker has built a significant following among progressive audiences, despite past controversies including a statement that “America deserved 9/11” and an incident where he shocked his dog with a training collar. He recently appeared at New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s victory celebration, where he was photographed with former congressman Jamaal Bowman and protest organizer Mahmoud Khalil.

This isn’t the first time Piker has expressed admiration for China’s governance model. In a previous video titled “TRUMPS VENEZUELA GAMBIT AND WHY CHINA IS JUST BETTER,” he praised China’s ability to make centralized decisions “beneficial for its own working class” and its capacity to “dramatically restructure their economy almost overnight.”

Last month, Piker suggested he “might have to move to China” after watching content about healthcare experiences there.

Media analysts note that Piker’s appearance on Chinese state television represents a significant propaganda win for the Chinese Communist Party, which has invested heavily in influencer outreach as part of its international image-building strategy. The incident highlights the growing intersection between social media influence and international politics, particularly as online personalities with massive followings increasingly comment on complex geopolitical issues.
