Former Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj has issued a scathing critique of the current government, accusing officials of systematically erasing the legacy of Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) fighters from public consciousness.
In a strongly worded statement released via social media, Haradinaj, who leads the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) party, condemned what he described as deliberate efforts to diminish the contributions of those who fought for Kosovo’s independence.
“With each passing day, the government is removing the fighters from public memory, while propaganda aims to push them toward collective oblivion,” Haradinaj stated, highlighting what he perceives as a coordinated campaign against veterans of the 1998-1999 conflict with Serbian forces.
The former prime minister, himself a former KLA commander, pointed to a pattern of disrespect toward veterans, noting they have been “ignored, then insulted, even for their attire” during commemorative events and memorial ceremonies. This treatment, according to Haradinaj, represents a deliberate strategy rather than isolated incidents.
More seriously, Haradinaj accused the government of manipulating official documents and legal proceedings with the explicit goal of undermining the status and reputation of KLA fighters. The AAK leader suggested these actions are politically motivated attempts to rewrite Kosovo’s recent history.
“Beyond any political blow, the spiritual and mental structure of the warrior remains untouchable,” Haradinaj declared, emphasizing the resilience of those who served. “Warriors always live with clear goals. They are not afraid of storms, because storms fear their determination.”
His comments come amid ongoing tensions in Kosovo politics regarding the legacy of the independence struggle and how it should be remembered. The current government, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti and his Vetëvendosje party, has taken a different approach to national identity and history than previous administrations.
This dispute reflects deeper divisions within Kosovo society about how to balance honoring the sacrifices made during the conflict while addressing complex questions about wartime actions as the country seeks international recognition and European Union membership.
The treatment of war veterans has become particularly sensitive in recent years as several former KLA commanders, including ex-President Hashim Thaçi, have faced war crimes charges at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague. These proceedings have polarized public opinion in Kosovo, with many viewing them as an unjust targeting of liberation fighters.
In his statement, Haradinaj portrayed KLA veterans as stoic figures who have “seen up close the thin line between life and death” and who are now “dying naturally, proud and stoic, with a single caveat, that they did not suffer the fate of martyrs.” This characterization frames them as honorable soldiers rather than potential war criminals.
Haradinaj concluded with a call for solidarity among survivors of the conflict, urging them to stand together “stronger than the propaganda that aims to weaken them.”
“Blessed are you, as the people say, for your contribution, sacrifice and example. Woe to those who will always lose in shame,” he stated, in what appears to be a warning to current political leaders about the judgment of history.
The controversy highlights the ongoing challenges Kosovo faces in reconciling with its recent past while building institutions that meet international standards of justice and accountability – a balancing act that continues to divide political leaders more than two decades after the conflict ended.
