In a candid reflection on his political journey, Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) Secretary General Jefferson T. Koijee has revealed that years of political persecution, exile, and public scrutiny have reinforced his personal resolve rather than broken his spirit.

Speaking about his experiences, Koijee detailed a sustained campaign of what he describes as targeted attacks against him, including international sanctions, propaganda efforts, and public accusations that he believes were designed to undermine both his political career and personal standing.

“Many people only see the public face of politics,” Koijee noted, “but few understand the emotional and psychological toll that comes with exile and constant public accusations.”

The former political figure, who faced sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, challenged his critics by asserting that despite allegations of corruption and human rights abuses, no concrete evidence of hidden wealth, foreign bank accounts, or illicit properties linked to him has ever been substantiated or publicly presented.

Koijee maintains that the campaign against him was orchestrated not to uncover truth but to systematically dismantle his character and diminish his political influence within Liberia’s political landscape. Throughout his statement, he emphasized his connection with ordinary Liberians, particularly youth and vulnerable populations, as his most valued political relationship.

The CDC Secretary General also used the opportunity to criticize the current administration of President Joseph Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung, alleging that Liberia has seen an increase in insecurity, human rights violations, unexplained deaths, and extrajudicial activities under their leadership. He expressed frustration with what he characterized as the silence of civil society organizations and former critics who, in his view, have failed to speak out against these issues with the same vigor they once directed at him.

Beyond the political ramifications, Koijee spoke poignantly about the personal cost of his tribulations, particularly regarding his children. He revealed they have suffered emotionally due to his extended absences from home during periods of exile and political turmoil.

Koijee also claimed that his personal property in Montserrado was destroyed during the August 23, 2025 demolition of the CDC National Headquarters, which he said occurred under state supervision. He firmly rejected allegations that weapons were found at the property, stating that no evidence was ever presented and no legal proceedings were initiated against him regarding such claims.

The political leader’s reflections come at a time when Liberia continues to navigate complex political divisions following the transition of power from the CDC-led government to the Boakai administration. Political analysts note that Koijee’s comments represent the ongoing tension between opposition figures and the current government, which has characterized Liberian politics in recent years.

Despite acknowledging the hardships he has faced, Koijee struck a philosophical tone about the lessons learned through adversity. He emphasized that these experiences have taught him valuable lessons about self-mastery, faith, and resilience in the face of significant challenges.

“Political power, propaganda, and hatred are temporary forces,” Koijee stated, “but truth ultimately prevails.” He concluded with the observation that true victory lies not in defeating others but in overcoming internal struggles with bitterness, fear, anger, and hopelessness.

Koijee’s statements come as the CDC continues to reposition itself as the main opposition party in Liberia following its electoral defeat. Political observers note that his public reflections may signal the party’s strategy to rebuild its image while criticizing the current administration’s governance record.

Koijee’s claims about lack of concrete evidence for the allegations against him raise some questions. I’d be curious to learn more about the specifics of the sanctions and accusations, and whether there has been a fair and transparent investigation process.

Political exile and targeted attacks can be extremely damaging, both professionally and personally. Even if someone is guilty of wrongdoing, the human experience of that level of scrutiny and ostracization should not be overlooked. This seems like a nuanced situation deserving of further examination.
