CNA TV Acquires Exclusive Rights to Stephen Kotkin’s Academic Lectures

CNA TV has made a groundbreaking move in Albanian media by acquiring exclusive rights to broadcast academic lectures from renowned historian and geopolitics scholar Stephen Kotkin. This marks one of the first instances in Albania where a television network has brought university-level lectures of this caliber to a general audience.

The network is currently airing the third installment of a documentary series titled “Mass Control and Propaganda,” featuring Kotkin’s detailed analysis of how authoritarian regimes maintain power and control populations.

In his lecture, Kotkin outlines six critical strategies that authoritarian regimes employ to maintain power. He begins by explaining how such regimes must effectively demobilize opposition by raising the costs of dissent through mechanisms like fines, imprisonment, job loss, educational penalties, and travel restrictions.

“Raise the standards, the costs against the opposition, against political mobilization. This is known as demobilizing the opposition,” Kotkin explains. However, he notes this alone is insufficient since determined opposition may still emerge despite high personal costs.

The second critical element, according to Kotkin, is the regime’s ability to mobilize its own supporters. “You need your crowd or the mobilized crowd ready to go into action as a pro-regime mobilization,” he states, citing Iran’s ability to counter massive opposition protests with hundreds of thousands of regime supporters in 2009.

Third, authoritarian regimes must control or manipulate life opportunities. By governing access to education, employment, or travel, regimes create powerful levers of social control. “If you can grant or even better deny entry into university, that’s a really big deal,” Kotkin emphasizes, noting that controlling state-owned enterprises provides additional mechanisms for rewarding loyalty and punishing dissent.

The fourth pillar involves control over scarce resources. When basic necessities or opportunities are limited and state-controlled, the power to allocate them becomes a potent tool for maintaining authority.

Media control constitutes the fifth essential element. “You have to have influence, better yet control over the mainstream media,” Kotkin explains. He highlights television stations as “an absolute must” and notes the growing importance of internet control, which requires constant work to “spread your story and block other stories.”

Finally, successful authoritarian regimes require compelling narratives that resonate with portions of society. These narratives typically involve external threats, foreign subversion, ethnic or religious minorities, international organizations like the IMF, or “naive liberals” who can be portrayed as undermining national interests.

The broadcasting of such high-level academic content represents a significant development in Albanian media, potentially elevating public discourse around political systems and power structures. CNA TV’s initiative brings sophisticated analysis of authoritarian mechanisms to a broader audience at a time when understanding such dynamics has global relevance.

The documentary series continues to air on CNA TV, offering viewers rare access to university-level insights on governance, propaganda, and social control from one of the world’s leading scholars in the field.
