In a show of political combativeness, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka accused Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders of orchestrating a misinformation campaign against Telangana’s Congress government during a party event in Khammam on Tuesday.
“The BRS is unable to accept the Congress government’s growing popularity due to its welfare and development programmes,” Vikramarka declared at the oath-taking ceremony for the newly appointed District Congress Committee (DCC) executive committee at Sanjeeva Reddy Bhavan.
The Deputy Chief Minister claimed opposition forces were engaged in deliberate “mudslinging” aimed at tarnishing the government’s image. He urged party workers to ensure welfare schemes reach every eligible beneficiary while simultaneously countering what he termed as “conspiracies” by opposition parties.
Vikramarka emphasized Khammam’s historical significance as a Congress stronghold and directed the newly appointed district committee members to align their work with the party’s fundamental principles and constitutional values.
In his address, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted several flagship welfare initiatives implemented by the Congress government since taking power. He pointed to agricultural support programs including Rythu Bharosa and Minimum Support Price initiatives, noting that farmers growing premium rice varieties now receive a ₹500 bonus per quintal, benefiting thousands of cultivators across the state.
“The government has sanctioned 3,500 houses per assembly constituency, totaling 4.5 lakh homes statewide with an investment of ₹22,500 crore,” Vikramarka said, detailing the administration’s housing commitments.
The Deputy CM also underscored the government’s food security program, which provides free fine rice to 1.06 crore families despite elevated market prices. “This initiative remains unmatched by any other state in the country,” he claimed, positioning Telangana’s welfare approach as exceptional.
Educational welfare formed another key component of Vikramarka’s address. He noted recent increases in hostel mess and cosmetic charges while announcing the imminent launch of a breakfast program for school students on June 2. The initiative is expected to serve approximately 28 lakh students across Telangana. Looking ahead, he revealed plans to extend mid-day meals to intermediate students in the upcoming academic year, further expanding the educational support framework.
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, who also addressed the gathering, called on Congress workers to intensify publicity efforts around government welfare schemes. He attributed the party’s electoral success to grassroots cadre efforts and stressed the importance of continued public engagement to maintain political momentum.
The event included a ceremonial tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary, with party leaders participating in a community feast at Ambedkar Bhavan following the official proceedings.
Several prominent political figures attended the function, including Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Goud and Khammam Member of Parliament Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy.
The political messaging at the Khammam event reflects growing tensions between the ruling Congress and opposition BRS in Telangana, where both parties continue to vie for public support through competing welfare narratives. As the Congress government implements its promised schemes, the political rhetoric suggests an intensifying battle for narrative control that will likely shape the state’s political landscape in coming months.
