Political News Website Linked to Right-Wing Propaganda Campaign in Colombia
Political news outlet La Silla Vacia has become embroiled in controversy after evidence emerged connecting it to “Project Jupiter,” a far-right propaganda campaign allegedly funded by some of Colombia’s most conservative corporations.
The scandal erupted when Raya magazine and RTVC, Colombia’s public television network, published a flyer identifying La Silla Vacia as one of the “digital agencies” participating in the propaganda effort. The campaign has reportedly organized “democracy workshops” for tens of thousands of workers and published online content designed to generate “fear, indignation, and uncertainty” among voters ahead of Colombia’s presidential elections.
In an audio recording that surfaced during the investigation, former Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez, who directs the propaganda campaign, explicitly mentioned La Silla Vacia’s involvement. “We have digital agencies—namely [libertarian think tank] Libertank and La Silla Vacia—which are enabling us to scale up at an incredible rate,” Bermudez stated in the recording.
According to Bermudez, Project Jupiter has reached approximately 17 million people across all 32 Colombian provinces through its collaboration with various digital platforms, including several public relations firms. When questioned by Raya about La Silla Vacia’s participation, Bermudez confirmed that Project Jupiter was permitted to publish content on platforms owned by the news website.
La Silla Vacia has vehemently denied these allegations. In an official statement, the website rejected claims of involvement in propaganda efforts aimed at promoting libertarian ideals or discouraging voters from supporting leftist frontrunner Ivan Cepeda or his far-right opponent Abelardo de la Espriella. The news outlet characterized the reports as “part of a smear campaign.”
The timing of these revelations has raised eyebrows in Colombia’s political landscape. The scandal emerged just days after far-right candidate Paloma Valencia’s campaign published images showing a meeting between campaign managers and investors from Banco Santander that included Juanita Leon, the founder of La Silla Vacia. When questioned about her presence at this gathering, Leon claimed she had attended the campaign meeting accidentally.
This is not the first time La Silla Vacia has faced accusations of political bias. Previously, presidential candidate Ivan Cepeda accused the outlet of participating in an opposition campaign to damage his reputation, allegations that Leon and her news platform have consistently denied.
The controversy highlights growing concerns about media independence in Colombia, particularly as the country approaches a pivotal presidential election. Media watchdogs have increasingly warned about the influence of corporate interests in Colombian journalism and the blurring lines between objective reporting and political advocacy.
Project Jupiter’s stated objectives appear to focus on countering left-wing political movements in Colombia, a country still navigating the complex aftermath of decades of armed conflict and political polarization. The campaign’s reported strategy of generating negative emotions among voters aligns with modern political influence operations seen in various democracies worldwide.
Colombia’s media landscape has become increasingly fragmented in recent years, with traditional outlets losing ground to digital platforms and social media channels. This transformation has created new vulnerabilities to information manipulation and coordinated influence campaigns.
As investigations continue, the allegations surrounding La Silla Vacia raise important questions about transparency in media funding, the role of corporate interests in political campaigns, and the responsibilities of news organizations to maintain editorial independence in Colombia’s charged political environment.
