China Warns of War Readiness Amid Escalating Tensions with Japan

China’s military has escalated its rhetoric against Japan with the release of a provocative propaganda video titled “If war breaks out today, this is my response.” The video, produced by the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force—the branch responsible for China’s missile arsenal—features dramatic footage of fighter jets and warships in what appears to be a direct warning amid deteriorating Sino-Japanese relations.

The timing of the video is particularly significant, coming just two weeks after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Japan. Her comments have sparked the worst diplomatic crisis between the two Asian powers in more than a decade.

Following Takaichi’s statement, a Chinese diplomat made a controversial remark suggesting she should be “decapitated,” further inflaming tensions. Beijing has repeatedly demanded that Takaichi—who models herself after former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and has embraced the nickname “Iron Lady”—retract her comments, but she has steadfastly refused.

On Sunday, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced that Japan would proceed with plans to deploy missiles on Yonaguni island to “lower the chance of an armed attack.” The island sits just 67 miles from Taiwan, making it strategically significant in any potential cross-strait conflict. According to Kyodo News, Japan intends to station Type-03 medium-range surface-to-air missiles capable of intercepting aircraft and ballistic missiles.

China swiftly condemned Japan’s missile deployment plan, with a Foreign Ministry spokesperson characterizing it as a deliberate attempt to “create regional tension and provoke military confrontation.” Beijing has responded to the diplomatic crisis with a series of retaliatory measures, including issuing military threats, canceling flights between the two countries, warning tourists to avoid Japan, and summoning the Japanese ambassador.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning accused “right-wing forces in Japan” of “leading Japan and the region toward disaster” during a recent press briefing.

The propaganda video, while not explicitly mentioning Japan, is widely interpreted as a threat directed at its Asian neighbor. It was released the same day that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi publicly addressed Takaichi’s comments, marking the first time such a senior Beijing official has weighed in on the issue.

Wang described Takaichi’s remarks as crossing “a red line that should not have been touched,” adding that it was “shocking for a sitting Japanese leader to openly send a wrong signal of attempting to intervene militarily in the Taiwan question.”

“China must resolutely hit back—not only to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity but also to defend the hard-won postwar achievements secured with blood and sacrifice,” Wang stated.

The PLA video was published with English captions and distributed by China’s English-language state media, suggesting it was intended for international consumption rather than solely domestic audiences. In typical PLA style, the production resembles a Hollywood movie trailer more than a military demonstration, featuring missile launches interspersed with footage from China’s recent military parade in September. The video is set to a military song titled “If war breaks out today,” which contains lyrics about war preparation and mobilization.

This latest propaganda effort follows a pattern of Beijing releasing military capability videos at strategic moments. In 2022, China’s Eastern Theatre Command published similar footage on the eve of then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan—the highest-ranking American official to visit the island in 25 years. China responded to that visit with widespread condemnation and increased military exercises around Taiwan.

The current standoff represents a dangerous escalation in East Asian regional tensions, with both nations appearing unwilling to back down from their respective positions.
