Pro-Russian propaganda has intensified across Bulgaria in recent weeks as the country approaches its upcoming parliamentary elections, according to multiple security analysts and media watchdogs.

Bulgarian intelligence agencies have reported a significant uptick in disinformation campaigns originating from Russian-affiliated sources, targeting the country’s democratic institutions and attempting to sway voter opinions. The campaigns have been particularly visible on social media platforms and through certain news outlets with suspected ties to Moscow.

“We’re seeing coordinated efforts to undermine Bulgaria’s sovereignty and Euro-Atlantic orientation,” said Petar Ivanov, a senior researcher at Sofia’s Center for Democratic Resilience. “The narratives are crafted to exploit existing social divisions and erode trust in Bulgaria’s Western partnerships.”

The propaganda efforts come at a particularly sensitive time for Bulgaria, which has struggled to form a stable government through five parliamentary elections in the past two years. Political fragmentation has created fertile ground for external influence operations, experts warn.

Russia has historically maintained significant cultural and economic ties with Bulgaria, a former Soviet bloc country that joined NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007. Despite these Western alignments, Bulgaria remains heavily dependent on Russian energy resources and maintains complex bilateral relations with Moscow.

The current wave of propaganda particularly emphasizes energy security concerns, according to a recent report from the European External Action Service. Messages suggesting that Bulgaria’s energy prices would dramatically decrease if the country abandoned EU sanctions against Russia have proliferated across Bulgarian-language websites and social media.

“These messages deliberately misrepresent the economic realities while appealing to citizens’ legitimate concerns about rising living costs,” explained Maria Stoyanova, media analyst at the Bulgarian Institute for Public Policy. “It’s a calculated attempt to drive a wedge between Bulgaria and its European partners.”

Security experts have identified several tactics being employed in the current campaign, including the use of seemingly legitimate news sites that publish a mix of factual reporting and subtly distorted narratives favoring Russian interests. Additionally, networks of coordinated social media accounts amplify these messages while posing as ordinary Bulgarian citizens.

The Bulgarian electoral commission has established a specialized task force to monitor and counter election-related disinformation but faces significant challenges given the scale and sophistication of the operations.

“This is not a new phenomenon, but the intensity and technological sophistication have increased dramatically,” noted General Kiril Petkov, former security advisor to the Bulgarian government. “We’re dealing with professional information warfare specialists who understand how to exploit our democratic openness.”

The propaganda campaign appears strategically aimed at political parties advocating for stronger ties with the European Union and NATO. Pro-Western politicians have reported being targeted by smear campaigns that question their patriotism and suggest they would subordinate Bulgarian interests to foreign powers.

Bulgaria’s position as a NATO member on the Black Sea gives it strategic importance in the broader geopolitical contest between Russia and Western allies. The country hosts several military facilities used by NATO forces and has participated in alliance exercises that Moscow has criticized as provocative.

In response to the propaganda surge, the European Union has deployed additional resources to its East StratCom Task Force, which works to counter Russian disinformation campaigns in Eastern Europe. The unit has identified over 200 false or misleading narratives targeting Bulgarian voters since the election campaign officially began.

Media literacy experts emphasize that countering such disinformation requires more than just fact-checking. “We need comprehensive educational efforts to help citizens recognize manipulation techniques and evaluate information critically,” said Nikolai Dimitrov, who leads digital literacy programs at Sofia University.

As election day approaches, Bulgarian authorities have urged voters to verify information through multiple sources and remain vigilant against emotional manipulation. However, in a country where trust in institutions remains relatively low, the effectiveness of such appeals remains uncertain.

Political analysts suggest that regardless of the election outcome, addressing foreign interference in Bulgaria’s information space will remain a crucial challenge for the country’s democratic resilience and European integration in the years ahead.
