BRS Leader Alleges Congress Government’s “False Propaganda” Over Kaleshwaram Project
Former MLA and BRS Nalgonda district president Ramavath Ravindra Kumar Naik has accused the Telangana Congress government of deliberately spreading misinformation about the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme to tarnish the reputation of former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
Speaking to reporters at the BRS district office in Nalgonda on Thursday, Naik claimed that Congress leaders had visited the Medigadda barrage prior to the recent Assembly elections with clear political intentions, using the project’s alleged structural issues as campaign ammunition.
“The Congress party has launched a false narrative claiming the Kaleshwaram project has collapsed,” Naik stated. “This is nothing but a calculated attempt to defame our former Chief Minister and BRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao.”
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, one of India’s largest multi-purpose irrigation initiatives with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore, has become a flashpoint in Telangana politics. Conceived during the previous BRS government under Chandrasekhar Rao, the project aimed to transform the agricultural landscape of northern Telangana by diverting water from the Godavari River.
According to Naik, the Congress government’s establishment of the P.C. Ghosh Commission to investigate alleged irregularities in the project was politically motivated. “The commission was specifically formed to target K. Chandrasekhar Rao and former minister T. Harish Rao,” he alleged.
Naik pointed to recent High Court observations that reportedly characterized the commission’s inquiry as “contrary to the principles of natural justice.” He further claimed the commission’s findings were predetermined, asserting that “the report was prepared according to a script provided by the Congress party.”
The former MLA refuted allegations that the massive investment in Kaleshwaram had been wasted. “There is absolutely no truth to claims that Rs 1 lakh crore invested in the project has gone down the drain,” he insisted.
In a serious accusation against the current administration, Naik alleged that construction firm Larsen & Toubro had offered to repair cracks that appeared in two pillars at the Medigadda barrage—one of the project’s key components—but the Congress government refused to permit the repairs. This claim, if verified, could raise questions about the government’s approach to addressing the structural concerns at the site.
The controversy surrounding Kaleshwaram has significant implications for Telangana’s agricultural sector and water security. The massive project consists of barrages, reservoirs, tunnels, and pump houses designed to lift water from the Godavari River to provide irrigation to about 45 lakh acres of land across several districts in the state.
Naik also made broader political allegations, claiming the current Chief Minister and State Cabinet are “working in the interests of Andhra Pradesh” rather than Telangana. This accusation touches on the sensitive interstate relations that have characterized politics in the region since Telangana’s formation in 2014.
The BRS leader suggested the Congress government’s focus on the Kaleshwaram issue serves as a distraction tactic. “They are using this issue to divert public attention from their failure to implement pre-poll promises,” Naik alleged, referencing commitments made by Congress during their successful election campaign.
The press conference was attended by several BRS leaders, including MLC C. Koti Reddy, Banda Narender Reddy, Kancherla Bhupal Reddy, and N. Bhasker Rao, suggesting a coordinated party response to defend their previous government’s flagship project.
As this political battle intensifies, the technical evaluation of the Kaleshwaram project’s structural integrity remains crucial for determining both its future viability and the validity of claims from both political sides.
