Security camera footage has emerged capturing the moments when an alleged impaired driver crashed into a popular El Paso restaurant early Sunday morning, causing significant property damage but fortunately resulting in no injuries.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. at the Ardovino’s Pizza restaurant located on Cincinnati Avenue in West El Paso’s Kern Place neighborhood, according to police reports. The footage, which has been circulating on social media, shows a dark-colored sedan veering off the road before crashing through the restaurant’s front entrance.
El Paso Police Department spokesperson Sergeant Robert Gomez confirmed that the driver, identified as 26-year-old Miguel Hernandez, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. This marks Hernandez’s second DWI offense, elevating the charge to a Class A misdemeanor that carries potential penalties of up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
“We’re extremely fortunate this occurred during non-operating hours when no staff or customers were present,” said Marina Ardovino, co-owner of the family-run establishment that has served the El Paso community for over three decades. “The material damage can be repaired, but human lives cannot be replaced.”
The impact destroyed the restaurant’s front entrance, shattered multiple windows, and damaged several tables and chairs in the dining area. Structural engineers were called to assess the building’s integrity, particularly concerning the compromised entrance facade.
This incident highlights a concerning trend in El Paso County, where DWI-related incidents have increased by approximately 12% over the past year, according to data from the Texas Department of Transportation. El Paso Police Department records indicate that officers have made over 1,500 DWI arrests since January, representing a significant uptick compared to the same period last year.
City Councilmember Peter Svarzbein, whose district includes the Cincinnati Entertainment District where the restaurant is located, expressed concern about the incident. “This unfortunate event underscores the need for continued vigilance regarding impaired driving, especially in areas with high concentrations of bars and restaurants,” Svarzbein stated.
The Cincinnati Entertainment District, known for its vibrant nightlife, has been the focus of increased police patrols in recent months. Local business owners have collaborated with law enforcement to implement safety measures, including designated rideshare pickup locations and expanded security camera coverage.
Despite the extensive damage, Ardovino’s Pizza management announced plans to reopen within two weeks once repairs are completed and safety inspections are passed. The restaurant has established a temporary pickup window at the rear entrance to maintain service for regular customers during the renovation period.
“We’re overwhelmed by the support from our community,” Marina Ardovino added. “Several neighboring businesses have offered temporary space, and our loyal customers have been reaching out with encouraging messages.”
Insurance adjusters estimate the damage at approximately $75,000, covering structural repairs and replacement of damaged equipment and furnishings. The restaurant’s management is working with their insurance provider to expedite the claims process and restore operations as quickly as possible.
The El Paso Restaurant Association has highlighted this incident as a reminder of the critical importance of designated driver programs and rideshare options. “Our local hospitality industry is committed to promoting responsible alcohol consumption,” said Frank Mares, president of the association. “This incident serves as a sobering reminder of what can happen when those principles are ignored.”
Hernandez has been released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court next month. If convicted, he faces mandatory installation of an ignition interlock device in addition to potential jail time and fines.
Local advocacy groups, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), have used this incident to renew calls for stricter DWI enforcement and expanded public transportation options during late-night hours when bars and restaurants close.
