Congress Leader Venugopal Accuses BJP of “Hollow Propaganda” Over Vande Mataram

Senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal has launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of engaging in “hollow propaganda” regarding the patriotic song Vande Mataram. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary warned that the BJP’s historical actions would eventually expose its true agenda.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Venugopal claimed that the nationalist song is conspicuously absent from gatherings of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent organization of the BJP. “Vande Mataram is not being recited in the shakhas of the RSS,” he stated, suggesting a disconnect between the party’s public rhetoric and its practices.

Venugopal alleged that the BJP was deliberately misinterpreting the song in the context of the upcoming West Bengal elections, a state where cultural identity and nationalism have become central campaign themes. The Congress leader’s comments come at a time when several states are witnessing heightened political tensions over issues related to national symbols and patriotism.

“The BJP has never shown reverence for the national anthem or its author, Rabindranath Tagore,” Venugopal asserted. “Nor has it had any connection with the Indian independence movement or freedom struggle songs.” He characterized the BJP’s primary function as distorting and erasing India’s historical narrative.

The controversy over Vande Mataram has a long and complex history in Indian politics. Composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in the 1870s, the song became a rallying cry during India’s independence movement. However, its status has been periodically contested in post-independence India, with various political factions taking different stances on its significance and usage.

Political analysts note that the BJP has consistently positioned itself as the guardian of national symbols and patriotic expressions, making Venugopal’s accusations particularly pointed. The Congress, meanwhile, has sought to reclaim its historical connection to India’s freedom struggle, which it led under figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

During the same press conference, Venugopal addressed another contentious issue, endorsing allegations made by fellow Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala regarding the Sabarimala gold theft case. He described Chennithala’s claims about international mafia involvement as “serious” and accused the current government of attempting to “divert attention” from the investigation.

“The government is trying to protect the guilty,” Venugopal claimed, suggesting a cover-up in the Sabarimala case, which involves the reported theft of gold from the famous Hindu temple in Kerala.

The Sabarimala temple, one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India with millions of devotees annually, has been at the center of several controversies in recent years. The alleged gold theft has added another dimension to the temple’s complex position in Kerala’s political landscape.

Political observers suggest that Venugopal’s dual focus on the Vande Mataram controversy and the Sabarimala case reflects the Congress party’s strategy to challenge the BJP on issues of both nationalism and governance, particularly in states where religious sentiment plays a significant role in electoral politics.

As India approaches several key state elections in the coming months, the rhetoric around national symbols, cultural identity, and religious institutions is likely to intensify, with both major parties seeking to position themselves as the authentic representatives of Indian values and traditions.
