In a sharply-worded rebuke, Telangana BJP state president N. Ramchander Rao has condemned the Congress government’s recent Assembly resolution against the renamed rural employment guarantee scheme, calling on party workers to counter what he described as “false campaigns” by opposition parties.
Speaking at a state-level meeting of BJP office-bearers at the party headquarters in Hyderabad, Rao criticized the Congress government for passing a resolution against the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar-Aajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025, commonly known as VB G RAM G Act—the renamed version of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The meeting was attended by several key BJP figures including state in-charge Abhay Patil, organizational general secretary Chandrasekhar Tiwari, and other senior party leaders. During his address, Rao instructed party workers to effectively communicate the central government’s welfare schemes to the public and ensure eligible beneficiaries are reached.
“Our opposition parties, particularly Congress and BRS, are deliberately spreading misinformation about the G RAM G Act with the sole intention of criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP,” Rao stated. He emphasized that this “malicious propaganda” was creating unnecessary confusion among rural populations who stand to benefit from the employment guarantee program.
The BJP leader’s comments come amid growing political tensions in Telangana, where the Congress government has openly opposed the central government’s decision to rebrand MGNREGA. The rural employment guarantee scheme, originally launched in 2005 during the UPA government, has been a flagship social security measure providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment to rural households.
The renaming of the program has sparked controversy across several states, particularly those ruled by opposition parties. Critics argue that rebranding undermines the scheme’s legacy and purpose, while the BJP maintains that the new version includes improvements and enhanced benefits for rural workers.
The MGNREGA program has been a crucial safety net for millions of rural Indians, especially during economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to enhance livelihood security by providing work opportunities, creating durable assets, and strengthening the rural economy. The scheme has been particularly important in states like Telangana, where a significant portion of the population still depends on agricultural and rural employment.
Rural development experts note that beyond the political naming controversy, the effective implementation of the employment guarantee scheme remains crucial for addressing rural poverty and unemployment. The success of such programs depends largely on sufficient funding, timely wage payments, and proper monitoring mechanisms—issues that have often been points of contention between central and state governments.
In his address, Rao further directed BJP workers to create “clear awareness” about various welfare schemes implemented by the central government. This instruction comes as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to strengthen its grassroots presence in Telangana, a state where it has been working to expand its electoral footprint.
The political battle over rural employment schemes highlights the continuing tensions between the BJP-led central government and opposition-ruled states over policy implementation, program funding, and political branding. As elections approach in various states, such issues are likely to remain at the forefront of political discourse, with both sides attempting to claim credit for welfare initiatives while criticizing their opponents’ approaches.
As this political confrontation unfolds, rural beneficiaries will be watching closely to see how these changes might affect their access to employment opportunities and livelihood support in the coming years.
