India Surpasses Japan to Become World’s Fourth-Largest Economy, BJP Criticizes Opposition

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla launched a sharp critique of Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, labeling him a “leader of propaganda” following India’s rise to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, surpassing Japan.

The remarks came in response to Gandhi’s previous statements describing India as having a “dead economy.” Poonawalla told ANI that recent economic data had effectively discredited Gandhi’s claims about India’s economic health.

“Rahul Gandhi, who is an expert at making anti-India statements, goes to Berlin and spreads malicious propaganda against India, sometimes against the army, sometimes against constitutional institutions, against Sanatan and economic power, has now faced reality today,” Poonawalla said.

The BJP spokesperson highlighted the significant economic advancement achieved under the current administration compared to previous governments. “India’s economy has now reached the fourth position, while in Manmohan Singh’s era, it was at the 11th position. Today, we have overtaken Japan. In the next two and a half to three years, we will become the third-largest economy,” he added.

The controversy stems from comments Gandhi made in July 2025, when he appeared to agree with then-US President Donald Trump’s assessment of India’s economy as “dead.” Gandhi had stated: “Yes, he is right, everybody knows this except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy.”

According to government data, India’s Gross Domestic Product has now exceeded $4.18 trillion, cementing its position as the fourth-largest economy globally. Economic analysts note that this represents a remarkable trajectory of growth despite global economic headwinds affecting many developed economies.

The government release highlighted that India’s real GDP expanded by 8.2 percent in the second quarter of the financial year 2025-26, reaching a six-quarter high. This followed strong growth of 7.8 percent in the first quarter and 7.4 percent in the fourth quarter of FY 2024-25, demonstrating resilient domestic demand despite challenging international trade conditions.

The achievement marks a significant milestone in India’s economic journey, which has been characterized by structural reforms, infrastructure development, and digital transformation initiatives over the past decade. Economists point to increased manufacturing activity, robust services sector growth, and rising domestic consumption as key drivers behind the economic expansion.

However, the opposition Congress party has questioned the validity of these economic figures. Congress leader Rashid Alvi challenged the credibility of the GDP calculations, suggesting that the government had altered the methodology to present a more favorable picture.

“It is completely wrong and baseless. The government has completely changed the way GDP is calculated. GDP is calculated worldwide on a production basis, but they have switched to a consumer basis,” Alvi claimed.

The dispute over data credibility has been ongoing, particularly after the International Monetary Fund’s annual review assigned India’s national accounts data a Grade ‘C’. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had addressed this concern, explaining that the grading was primarily due to the continued use of the 2011-12 base year for calculations, and noting that a revised base year of 2022-23 would be adopted starting next year.

Economic experts observe that while India’s achievement is significant, challenges remain in terms of job creation, income inequality, and inclusive growth. The government’s ability to translate macroeconomic success into widespread prosperity will likely determine the political impact of this economic milestone.

As India continues its upward economic trajectory, both domestic politics and global perceptions will be shaped by how effectively the benefits of this growth are distributed across all segments of society.

The news of India’s economic rise is certainly noteworthy, but I’m curious to hear more analysis from independent experts on the factors driving this growth and the sustainability of the country’s economic position. Political rhetoric can only tell us so much.

The BJP’s response seems defensive and overly partisan. While India’s economic ranking is noteworthy, that alone doesn’t tell the full story. I’d be curious to hear more analysis from independent experts on the drivers and challenges of India’s economic growth.

    • I agree, a more objective assessment from neutral sources would provide valuable context beyond the political rhetoric.
