BBC Under Fire as Reform UK Calls for Defunding After Trump Speech Scandal

Reform UK’s Education and Families spokesperson Belinda De Lucy has launched a scathing attack on the BBC, calling it a “conveyor belt of propaganda” that should be defunded following revelations that the broadcaster doctored a speech by former US President Donald Trump.

Speaking on the Daily Expresso podcast with host JJ Anisiobi, De Lucy claimed the BBC deliberately misrepresented Trump’s words prior to the January 6 Capitol riots and concealed this manipulation for months.

The controversy stems from a Telegraph investigation which revealed that the BBC edited Trump’s pre-riot speech to suggest he encouraged supporters to “fight like hell” at the Capitol. According to the investigation, the broadcast omitted Trump’s actual words urging supporters to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”

“The BBC has not only shamed that wonderful national treasure we used to have, but it’s shamed our country,” De Lucy said, referencing Trump’s own condemnation of the broadcaster on his Truth Social platform.

The scandal has already claimed high-profile casualties at the public broadcaster. BBC Director General Tim Davie and CEO of News Deborah Turness both resigned on Sunday night following the revelations, underscoring the severity of the editorial breach.

De Lucy dismissed claims from BBC employees that the editing was a mistake, arguing instead that it was deliberate manipulation. “No it wasn’t,” she stated. “You sat around an editorial table and you thought ‘how can we manipulate voters to vote against Trump, let’s make him out to be monster’. My question is, who else have they done this to?”

The Reform spokesperson’s comments reflect growing criticism of the BBC’s impartiality from right-leaning politicians and commentators. Her allegations that the broadcaster pushes “deeply contested ideologies” echo concerns raised by others who question whether the corporation still adheres to its charter obligation of political neutrality.

“They’ve stopped being a broadcaster, they’re now a conveyor belt for propaganda on ideologies,” De Lucy claimed, adding that BBC stories are “so anti-British” that the organization should either “return to their roots” or lose public funding.

The BBC, which is primarily funded through a mandatory license fee paid by UK households, has faced increasing scrutiny over its funding model in recent years. De Lucy’s comments touch on this ongoing debate, claiming the broadcaster is “not accountable to anyone” while “raking in the money every single year or putting people in prison” – referring to the criminal penalties that can be imposed for non-payment of the license fee.

Meanwhile, Trump has threatened legal action against the BBC. On his Truth Social platform, he described BBC journalists as “corrupt” and “very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election.”

The former president emphasized the international dimension of the scandal, noting that the BBC represents “a Foreign Country, one that many consider our Number One Ally,” before concluding: “What a terrible thing for Democracy!”

This controversy comes at a particularly challenging time for the BBC, which has faced criticism from both ends of the political spectrum over perceived bias in its coverage of various issues including Brexit, climate change, and international conflicts.

As the UK’s national broadcaster navigates this latest crisis, questions about its editorial processes, accountability mechanisms, and future funding model are likely to intensify, potentially reshaping the institution’s role in British public life.
