Fact-Checking Organization Exposes AI-Generated Video Spreading False Claims Against BNP

Bangladesh’s premier fact-checking organization, Rumor Scanner, has identified and exposed an artificial intelligence-generated video circulating false propaganda against the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The fabricated content falsely portrays a Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner making claims about BNP members being involved in acts of arson.

According to Rumor Scanner’s investigation team, the AI-generated video showed what appeared to be a DMP commissioner stating that a BNP member had been detained while attempting to set a vehicle on fire. The organization categorically labeled this as propaganda designed to damage the reputation of the opposition party.

“Our team conducted a thorough analysis of the video and confirmed it was created using artificial intelligence technology. The voice, mannerisms, and statement attributed to the DMP commissioner are entirely fabricated,” said a representative from Rumor Scanner.

This incident highlights the growing concern around deepfake technology and AI-generated content being weaponized in Bangladesh’s political landscape. As digital manipulation tools become more sophisticated and accessible, distinguishing authentic content from fabricated material poses an increasing challenge for both authorities and the public.

Bangladesh has witnessed a surge in politically motivated disinformation in recent years, particularly around election periods and times of political tension. Political parties, including the BNP, have frequently found themselves targeted by coordinated misinformation campaigns designed to influence public opinion.

Media experts warn that such sophisticated AI forgeries represent a dangerous evolution in political propaganda. Unlike crude photoshopped images or edited texts that dominated earlier disinformation efforts, AI-generated videos can create seemingly authentic footage that appears to show real officials making statements they never made.

“The technology has advanced to the point where these deepfakes can fool even careful viewers,” noted Dr. Fahim Rahman, a digital security analyst based in Dhaka. “When a video appears to show a high-ranking police official making serious allegations against a political party, it can have immediate and harmful effects on public perception before fact-checkers have time to investigate.”

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has previously expressed concern about the proliferation of deepfake content and its potential to disrupt social harmony and political stability. However, technical solutions to automatically detect such content remain limited in their effectiveness.

Rumor Scanner has urged citizens to exercise caution when encountering politically charged videos, especially those showing officials making unusual or inflammatory statements. The organization recommends verifying such content through multiple credible news sources before sharing or forming opinions based on them.

The BNP, one of Bangladesh’s main opposition parties, has previously complained about being targeted by digital disinformation campaigns. Party officials welcomed Rumor Scanner’s debunking of the video but expressed concern about the damage such content can cause before being identified as fake.

Law enforcement authorities have not yet commented on the specific video in question or announced any investigation into its origins. However, under Bangladesh’s Digital Security Act, creating and distributing fabricated content intended to harm reputations or create public disorder carries significant legal penalties.

This incident underscores the critical role of independent fact-checking organizations like Rumor Scanner in Bangladesh’s information ecosystem, especially as the country navigates increasingly sophisticated forms of digital manipulation and political propaganda.

As AI technology continues to advance, media literacy experts emphasize the growing importance of critical thinking skills among the public and the need for stronger institutional mechanisms to quickly identify and counter such deceptive content.
