Ann Arbor Public Schools Students Excel at National Academic Competition
Sixty students from Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) recently returned from the Academic Games Leagues of America National Tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina with an impressive collection of medals and national titles, showcasing the district’s commitment to academic excellence.
In a remarkable display of intellectual prowess, every single participating AAPS student earned at least one medal during the prestigious competition, which featured seven challenging academic events: Equations, On-Sets, Linguishtik, Presidents, Propaganda, Theme, and Current Events.
The district’s teams claimed eight national championships, including sweeping victories in both the Middle Division (7th and 8th grade) and Senior Division (11th and 12th grade). They also secured eight second-place finishes and numerous third, fourth, and fifth-place honors across various categories.
Students competed in four age divisions—Elementary (5th-6th grade), Middle (7th-8th grade), Junior (9th-10th grade), and Senior (11th-12th grade)—with teams from King Elementary School, Clague Middle School, Huron High School, and Skyline High School representing the district.
In the Elementary Division, AAPS teams demonstrated impressive mathematical abilities, with the Clague team “His Accidency” placing second in the Equations competition. Several individual standouts emerged, including Joseph Berhanu, who earned second place in Presidents, third in Propaganda, and achieved a perfect score in Linguishtik.
The Middle Division saw dominant performances from AAPS students, including Siddharth Sivaramakrishnan, who secured the overall Sweepstakes championship while placing in the top three in multiple events. The team “LeAcademic James” swept several categories, with national championships in Linguishtik, Presidents, Propaganda, and the overall Sweepstakes competition.
In the Junior Division, Andy He distinguished himself by winning both the Presidents competition and the overall Sweepstakes championship. His team, “Nick’s Bubble Guppies,” placed fourth in Current Events, while teammate Kavin Murali claimed the national title in the challenging Equations event.
The Senior Division team “Ginnickgagap” from Huron High School demonstrated extraordinary talent across multiple disciplines, winning national championships in Equations, Linguishtik, Propaganda, and the overall Sweepstakes competition. Team member Rogan Geyer took home the individual Sweepstakes championship while placing in the top three in Presidents, Propaganda, and Current Events.
The Academic Games competition tests students’ abilities in critical thinking, problem-solving, and knowledge application across various academic disciplines. Equations challenges mathematical reasoning, On-Sets focuses on set theory, and Linguishtik tests language and grammar skills. The Presidents event examines knowledge of U.S. presidential history, while Propaganda assesses students’ ability to identify persuasive techniques. Theme and Current Events test knowledge of contemporary topics and broader subject areas.
The district’s exceptional performance at this national competition highlights the strength of AAPS’s academic programs and its commitment to fostering intellectual growth beyond traditional classroom learning. It also demonstrates how extracurricular academic competitions can motivate students to develop advanced skills in mathematics, language, history, and critical thinking.
AAPS’s success at the national level reflects years of preparation, dedication from students, and support from teachers and parents. As these students return to their schools with their medals and trophies, they bring back not just accolades but valuable experience in high-level academic competition that will serve them well in future academic and professional endeavors.
